Talking Bangor vs. Orono for a grad student?

Hi!
I am moving to Maine in August to attend grad school at UMaine. I am debating on where to live. I understand there is a 15-20 minute commute to Orono from Bangor. That doesn't really bother me. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I will need cheap rent and my boyfriend will be looking for a job in Bangor. I would like to live in a bigger area I guess. Is the commute from Bangor to Orono bad in the winter? I am just trying to shop around now to find some rentals to check out. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The commute between Bangor and Orono isn't bad except at the times when everyone is going to work or school. I always got to umo about an hour early for the 8 o'clock classes... beats the traffic.

I agree with Austin, the commute isn't bad, but parking and drive time can be if you hit it at the wrong time. I went to Orono, and while I was a student I liked that environment, but that was as an undergrad. After graduation I moved to Bangor, and loved it. If I were going as a grad student I would probably choose to live in Bangor Best wishes with everything and welcome to the forum!

Do you like to have a few brews after classes? If so then I would recommend Orono.

Bangor is the second largest metro area in Maine and there are a variety of job opportunities because of that. The commute from Bangor to Orono is not very bad in the winter because of efficient road crews. I don't know anything about rentals, however. Welcome to the forum!

Stillwater ave does get alot of traffic.

Try Old Town instead. There is a network of bicycle trails that connect Old Town with the university.
