I was recently caught by surprise to see how much our insurance policy is to be covered to market farm produce.
One year's Insurance is costing me more than buying and building a greenhouse. One year's Insurance is costing me more than all expenses incurred in starting an apple orchard.

Our insurances home, cars, medical, dental, and life cost us just under 10% of our gross annual income. Between that and taxes.. we live frugally enough that we could retire by 50 and 53 instead of 55 and 58.

The federal government shut down an orchard in Maine for selling fresh cider. They said it had to be pasteurized. I wonder if they would pull that in Florida at a roadside stand selling orange juice.

I know a guy who sells apples and cider. He gives apples to another fellow who makes the 'soft' cider and pasteurized it, then he gets back a portion, which he sells.
All apple juices in Maine must be pasteurized.

Guess I will be scouring the landscape for abandoned apple trees and pressing cider in the dark of night, with Brandy standing lookout for "Barney" then.
Or does that provision not apply for home use?

You have to take those numbers with a grain of salt as well though. If you notice TAMC (The Aroostook Medical Center) which is in Presque Isle is listed twice. At position 18 as well as position 24. I would be interested in seeing what they use to obtain these numbers actually.

P.S. Gov. Baldacci - We know that you lurk on this forum, so won't you please try to help strengthen Maine's economy so we can all be happy and keep our taxes (including Forest Beekeepers) nice and low?

Ooops I do apologize, I meant that within the context of as a vendor marketing farm produce.
As we are seeing if we will not be able to get our kitchen 'licensed', then there are many various farm products that we may not be able to market.
So it modifies out long term plans.
BTW, Do you need any more eggs?

Isn't Baldacci a computer scientist? Maybe I'm getting it confused with rocket scientist.
