She is 84 years old and isn't driving anymore (not that she doesn't want to, and tells us how to drive at every opportunity ) She has been feeling a real loss of independence. I'll message you when we get back from Florida.
Msina, you are so sweet! My kids will always remember Maine. Even if we move we will keep this place so we can come in the summertime, and maybe even during hurricane evacuations we can head on up here.
Mermaid, I'm reading some of the crime stats for the area we are thinking about moving, and it is disturbing. It's the gangs that really scare me. I recently read about a 40-person "fight" in one of the public parks in Pensacola...sounds just lovely! We really liked Pensacola when we visited my husband's friend there, and it seemed to have a nice southern charm - but now we're having doubts. We are going to check out neighborhoods in June, and take the kids to the beautiful white sand beaches with the emerald waters. I just don't know at this point. Pensacola has an excellent Christian Academy that we would enroll our kids in, but we are thinking at this point that it's going to be really hard to beat Old Town in terms of safety.
All of you...thanks for caring!

Indeed the white sand beaches and emerald colored water is nice... come see it and then take your kids and RUN BACK HOME TO MAINE!
(come back when they're grown, it's much more fun)

We moved here with our 4 kids 5 years ago from Raleigh NC. You have to figure out a way to make a living or bring your money with you, but you don't need much compared to most places in the USA. There isn't much to do except smell the flowers, watch the water and feel the air. Sometimes your heart can get so full it will bring tears to your eyes or take your breath away. Some people don't like it at all. There are 2 kinds of baby arugula available at the local grocery, so there is enough sophistication to go around.

Well I live in Steuben and if you are not going to try and change how the locals live then any small town in Northern and Eastern Maine in either Arrostock County or Washington County would welcome you and you will find the locals are friendly and helpful as long as you do not cross them and expect to change their way of life with new rules and other what we call here in Steuben "Granola Issues" Homes in this area are selling well and CHEAP even for a coastal town now work is the other issue as you may have to travel to Ellsworth or Machias or Calais for work but it depends on what you do or want to do. Then there is the old home based business as a handy man or carpenter or such. Best of luck in your move and if you want check out mainemoves.com The broker we used to find our home was Jim Stoneton from the Maine Moves web site he was great.

I'm from aroostook county, loved it there and was always welcome, many small towns, but Mars Hill, Presque Isle, Easton and Fort Fairfield are great. Also Caribou and Limestone, there is a departmetn of defense center there for budgeting for the military, always has some openings. The houses are cheap and the area is big and beautiful! Good luck w/ your looking!

Good luck in your search. It sure looks like there are many great choices of places for you to live in Maine. We were in the Portland area a few weeks ago (in the small surrounding towns) and thought it was brilliant. The people were great!

We're currently looking for a home. I've done a lot of internet looking in small towns I'm familiar with. Some of the better smaller homes, in that price range (100k) with some land (1/2 acre to 2 acres or better) that I've found were in Greenbush, Costigan, and Lincoln. There are some nice ones also in Patten, though that's really farther than we want to go. Other towns to keep an eye on that I've noticed are Legrange, Dexter, and here in Milo. Most things I've seen in Milo at this time need a lot of work. But that's just the area I'm familiar with and looking in. Good Luck

Limington is great
I grew up in Limington ME and I must say that it is a great small town if you like the country and woods. I left Limington after high school and now live in Boston but whenever I return, I really appreciate how nice of a town it is. There is plenty of land and good priced real estate and about 30 miles west of Portland which is the big city in Maine. Boston is a 2 and a half hour drive if you want to go a bigger city. Limington has some good views of the mountains as well.
