Depends on where you are at in either State as well. There is a greater range in temps in MI because it is so much bigger than Maine, there is a larger North/South temp difference.

I think one thing that was missed is that the pellet stoves need electricity to run. Of course an oil boiler does too. If you are looking for an alternate or emergency heat source, the pellet stove isn't it, unless you have a generator.

The other thing to be aware of is smoke damage that can result if you lose power when you are not at home. My in-laws are insurance agents and they have received numerous smoke damage claims when the power goes out.

Just something to keep in mind.

ours are hooked up to car batteries on a system that kicks in if the power goes out, each battery lasts about 3 hours and we have 2 on each stove.

but i agree, you do want to be sure ot have some kind of back up power with them to run the fans as a just incase.

like ALL stoves theres pros and cons to all kinds.

There shouldn't be any smoke damage. I've had mine go out and no problems with smoke.

My preference is still the Pacific Energy SUMMIT CLASSIC PEDESTAL for about $1800. Has extended burn technology and 80.3% efficiency without a catalytic converter to wear out. It will pretty much burn any solid plant fuel.

Zarathu, once again I question you advice. You made me look up the Summit Classic Pedestal, and from the manual "The heater is designed to burn natural wood only".
There are multiple stoves on the market that burn biomass. I have a Bixby that will burn corn or pellets. I know of others who have burned oats and barley in their Bixby. The stove you recommend is a wood stove, not any solid plant burner.

kelly smith,

Wood is a solid plant unless its not dried. You can burn anything like that in a good wood stove. I've burned coal, wood, pellets, corn, etc in my Riteway Woodstove for more than 30 years of wood stove use. If you buy only a pellet stove, with a conveyer or just loading pellets, if you are no longer able to get manufactured pellets, thenyou are dead in the water. Sure you can buy the pellets now, but in the future? Who knows whether the hardwood pellets will always be available.

Do what you want! Question anything you want. 30 years of experience gives me an advantage in this area. I didn't "MAKE" you do anything. You chose to look up the Summit Pedestal.

I question your knowledge about wood burning, as is my right, and yours also.
