We spent the night in Littleton a few weeks ago. Definitely a nice town, but I woiuldn't call it "quiet." We made the mistake of staying in a hotel right on Main Street. The hotel was very nice, but the local teens driving up and down Main Street all night with their car stereos shaking the block kept me awake all night.

LoreneS is on a distinguished road
I live in a small town that is a bedroom community of Portland, I wouldn't recommend it for small town living. I am interested in Moving north. Does anyone know anything about living in Hartland (near Skowhegan) aside from the fishing? Is there a public beach on the lake. Is there any employment?
Thanks,

Very old thread, but very wise words for anyone contemplating relocation.

You can count on Acadianlion for telling it like it is!

Rangeley is a nice small town and I think they are sorta Norman Rockwell. Beautiful mountain views lovely lakes and very nice people with a simple but open minded way about them. They definately don't favor change to their small town feel but are very welcoming atleast in my experience but I am a native Mainer.

The following is my preferred definition for curmudgeon. Nothing wrong with it, as far as I am concerned. Perhaps reflects a more practical and realistic outlook on life and humanity. I proudly count myself as one also, Acadianlion!

" curmudgeons are those who refuse to compromise their standards and can't manage the suspension of disbelief necessary for feigned cheerfulness...They don't hate mankind, just mankind's absurdities. They're just as sensitive and softhearted as the next girl/guy, but they hide their vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy. They ease the pain by turning hurt into humor...They attack maudlinism because it devalues genuine sentiment... Nature...has endowed them with astute perception and sly wit...They have the temerity to comment on the human condition without apology. They not only refuse to applaud mediocrity, they howl it down with morose glee. Their versions of the truth unsettle us, and we hold it against them, even though they soften it with humor."
