Away from Crowds
I'd enjoy the cool summers in Maine and I had been looking at Portland but from what I've seen it looks kind of crowded.
Anywhere nearby or in Maine that doesn't have all the crowds but where there still might be some things to do?

It depends on what you're looking for. Bangor and Waterville are very nice towns AND during the summer months there are all kinds of festivals in some of the smaller towns - Milbridge Days in Milbridge and some type of fish festival in Eastport. Contact the Maine Department of Tourism and they will send you a book listing all of the festivals. OR you might could go on-line and retrieve the information. Good luck

Jazz festivals to go to in the summers, ski slopes in the winter!
We have towns with 5 people per square mile; which I would consider as not too crowded.
Fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, geo-caching, kayaking, lots of stuff to do!
From our back porch we go:
Then:
And the finally:
But that is just here, other folks will have other things on their land.

Wouldn't it depend on which "5" people they were??? LOL Sorry, Forrest, just had to mess with you!
The picture are ABSOLUTELY beautiful! Which I could see all of that beauty looking out my back door!

Forest, my husband is green with envy. What a beautiful location you have. But I'm guessing as you enter the water, where the stream meanders through the trees, you probably have a problem with mosquitos and/or black flies? Sure is gorgeous though.

Mosquitos are a bit thick in the afternoons.
Otherwise it is not so bad.

Do you want to be near the coast or inland?

Well if the wife comes with me she likes water and the ocean,so that'd be first shot. If not, anywhere is fine. I'd like to stay in central to southern state if I could if possible also.

The Belgrade Lakes region is central to both Waterville and Augusta. Waterville is a college town (Colby) and is nicely located to the coast and the mountains, as well as being an easy drive to Bangor and Portland. You won't find the congestion in central Maine that is found in southern Maine. It really all depends on the "feel" you want.
Southern Maine has a lot of really nice qualities as well but there will be more traffic, smaller house lots (in general) and much higher prices. On the up side, Portland or south would put you within an easy drive to Boston for a fun weekend.

NOT interested in any more cities thanks,Philadelphia is quite enough
So is that college town hopping with wild college kids? Because I don't care for that either. I want a place as quiet as possible.
