Speaking as somebody who was born and raised in Michigan (Ludington area) and also have lived in Maine for quite some time, let me answer a bit here.
Maine has some of the most picturesque coastline I have seen anyplace. Visualize the Pictured Rocks area but with granite of different hues for almost the entire length of the state.
Vast areas of timberland that would make the UP blush. All the more special because of it's remoteness here. I can literally drive the same distance as GR to Flint and not see a house, powerline, even another vehicle when in the North Maine Woods. It makes the Seney/Munising drive look like rush hour in AA.
Moose. That one kind of goes without saying really. I live in the Northern part of the state and can count on seeing Moose every single week at the very least, usually one or two a day isn't uncommon. I have even had a few in my yard and I live in town. The are unbelievable animals, and even more amazing is how they can just disappear into the trees so fast. It doesn't seem right that an animal that weighs 1000+ pounds can do that, but they do.
The rivers are giant compared to MI rivers. 99% of everything is rocky bottom and most rivers are quite shallow despite their width. It is quite deceiving when you have a river that is 75 feet wide but is only 2 feet deep in the Summer. Springtime it is a different story though, some of these rivers raise 20 or 30 feet during the Spring runoff and are very moving to watch their power gliding by.
There are other aspects of Maine that I will miss when we move back to West Michigan in a couple of weeks, but thanks for starting the thread so I could sit back and think about what really does make the State unique. I almost answered the people, but I have found that most people are the same no matter where you go. It just depends on how you are with them. I have met some great people here during my time, and I will miss them something awful, but I know that I have other friends waiting for me there as well. The people here are good, honest folks who work hard for what they have.

Oh Bydand,
Your description makes me miss Maine even more! AND I may have to give up my dream and will never get to Maine. Looks like I will be heading farther south to be with family! :-(

For those of us on the east coast or in New England particularly, and who cannot/do not wish to move far away due to family or other obligations, Maine represents the Last Great Frontier. One can move there and find beauty, affordability, seclusion, adventure, and refuge from the noise and crowds of the city. Maine's winters tend to keep its population in check, which appeals to many Mainers. It has a rugged and demanding climate that promotes fellowship among those who work to carve out a living there. Within a few hours' travel of the major metropilitan centers of the northeast, one can step into a different time, a different space.
The Maine woods are as different from Boston or Manhattan as anywhere could possibly be. Yet just a short distance away is sure to be even a small town, where the comforts of civilization beckon. Maine is a state that gives its residents a smorgasbord of choices. Probably more different lifestyles are lived in Maine than anywhere else on the east coast. It can be vacationland, luxury, hardship, work, leisure, wonder, wilderness, civilization, beauty, life, and death.
Maine is the Place!

My favorite things in Maine? The smell of the ocean, cruising the lakes, rivers & streams. The mountains in north western Maine. The open fields I'd see while snowmobiling up north. The views from the snowmobile trails up in the county are amazing riding those back woods, some you just knew many Mainers had never seen. The awe of the quiet out there is so peaceful.
Watching the lobsterman head out to sea early in the morning. Gulls overhead teasing them as they're working.
The small tiny little towns with just one store and a gas pump. You walk in and the guy/gal working the counter greets you like you're an old friend.
The lack of real traffic like I see down here. Most drivers being courteous and allowing you to enter from a side street as they're not in such a hurry. The pleasant wave from your friends as you drive by or you meet them on the road. People actually still smile up there. Not a lot of smiling people down here.
I guess the people of Maine are also one of my favorite things, we're a rare breed. We like each other, whether we've met or not. We share a common bond, it's our love of the state and knowing we share that bond.
Gosh, I'm a little wordy this morning. I could go on and on, but I won't!

The people. Out of the blue yesterday a man showed up here, took a look around, bought some vegetables, talked for a half hour then started to leave. Before he was out of the driveway he jumped out of the truck and asked if he can come back to volunteer on the farm. WHO does that! This is hard work! Who does that? Someone living in Maine! I don't know if he's a native or a transplant but he's certainly a Mainer.
The food. We all know how awesome our food.
The beauty. I hope to be hiking in Baxter State Park next weekend and I'm excited already. It's overcast and cool this morning but the flowers are vivid, the shades of green are lovely and the breeze blowing in the poplars makes the nicest sound.
