August Vacation In Dexter
A group of about 20 of us (extended family - no young children) are renting a compound on a lake in Dexter this August. Any and all suggestions of things to do in the area, restaurants, shopping, day trips, is appreciated. Is Moosehead Lake worth the drive? THANK YOU!

I agree with dmyankee. Moosehead is a beautiful area. You'll find plenty to do there.

Great. We will go to Moosehead. We've never stayed inland in Maine before - always on the coast. There doesn't seem to be much around in the immediate area - no day spas, shopping towns, restaurants, etc. Looks like we're fishing, cooking, eating and drinking! Maybe we'll take a trip to Bar Harbor as well one day.
Thank you again!

If you don't like those types of activities, or reading a book, taking a walk, riding a bicycle, canoeing, playing cards and board games, or that type of stuff you will be bored to tears. If it ends up raining at all you'll be sitting and staring at each other until it stops. There are restaurants in the area though not any five star ones. Shopping will be limited to local crafts and basic needs. You'd need to hit the coastal areas to find any of the things you mentioned in your post. Just relax... you don't really need to shop and eat out every night to have a nice vacation.

Ahhhhh yes, relax...
Thank you, Maineah, for reminding me what a vacation is really all about. (But did I mention that I'm going away with 20 extended family members? A few outside activies may prove to be a bit of a necessity. )
The information that you provided, dmyankee, is VERY helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to point me in the direction of some local pursuits. Waterfalls, hikes and even live entertainment at the Bear's Den Tavern!
Thank you all for your help. I am looking forward to a relaxing and pleasurable vacation!

You're right with that many people I'd be looking for day trips too.
You'll have a good time!
