It may be a "free" meal in one sense, but I think they have to work for it. Have YOU tried catching a fish in your beak? Seems much harder to me than sitting in a legislative body...

Not many egrets in Maine. More likely they were herons. Last summer I saw a great white heron.

Yes! Herons, that's the word I was looking for. That was the first time I've witnessed so many in one spot.

Sorry NMLM you are incorrect. There are tons of snowy egrets in southern Maine along the estuaries. They made a comeback many years ago....and yes I know the difference between a heron and an egret. It is QUITE possible you saw egrets!

The other bird that hangs out near rivers is the double breasted cormorant They're black and white and look kind of like a loon. They eat tons of bait fish!

Do any of the Cormorants have color on their head? My camera burned out last winter, otherwise, I'd have pictures.
