I thnik some people just can't feel confortable in strange places while others adapt easily. Those peole will always feel more at home in places more like their former surroundings. It has nothing to do with vactioning at all. That is diferent from actually living in a area to these people.

Well, we arrived in Pensacola last night and spent a good part of today looking around at neighborhoods. The homes I had pulled up on the internet were not at all what I had envisioned. The neighborhoods that looked nice and promising are far different in reality. No sidewalks, no parks for the kids We have seen lots of billboards advertising lawyers, billboards telling people not to smoke candy-flavored tobacco, and billboards offering rewards for information on homocides.

We will look around some more this coming week, but so far we are not getting a good vibe. The beaches sure are beautiful, though.

I adapted to living in Saudi Arabia - I adapted to living in Texas. Don't think I'm "non-adaptable", just looking for the best place to raise my kids

After being stationed here in the area for the last four years....my advice would be to look a little further east towards Navarre or Mary Esther for a place to live with kids. The nice areas are in the Gulf breeze and Navarre. Go over the 3 mile bridge (US98) and you are in Gulf Breeze....about 15 miles further is Navarre. I do not know what you are looking for exactly, but those areas are more child friendly than Pensacola proper unless you get out past the Mall (9th street near the airport) heading North, or continue west on US 98 heading towards Alabama. Those are the best areas for young kids in Pensacola proper. I hope you find what you need and have great luck and joy. Take care.

Hi txmom!
Glad you guys made it down! Yes, the billboards among other things are quite horrifying. It sure isn't anything like Maine. Maybe you'll find a nice small quiet town outside of Pensacola? If not, well you still have a nice safe place to go home to.

Meanwhile, just have fun checking out the fun stuff!

Not for everybody though. Maine is a nice place, but may not be the best for their situation and wants.

Good Luck to you in finding that "right fit" you are looking for Txmom.

Glad you made it there safely. Billboards! Is there anything uglier? We were in shock to find them out here too. Nasty things.

I hope you find "home" for you and your family whether that is in FL, ME, or someplace completely different. It's miserable to be living some place that feels so foreign.

Consider taking advantage of a realtor to take you around or at least tell you where to go.

When I was in Va last fall I walked into one of the local realtors office with a map and told them exactley what I was looking for. They took about 20 minutes with me drawing on the map right where I wanted to look. no pressure...I told them I just wanted to drive around and see potential neighborhoods.

P.S be carefull..........a bad first impression can really taint your ability to look at things objectively....have fun right now its 9:24 in the morning, cloudy, and 59..brrrr
