Default Teachers / HVAC in demand?

I had originally posted this in the Portland section but have moved it here at the suggestion of a reader.

I would just like to ask what the job market is like in the Portland area for teacher-librarians (or just teachers) and HVAC technicians. We are putting "feelers" out to see if it would be realistic for us to consider moving to the Portland area or not. We fell in love with it when we visited a while back.

Thanks everyone for looking ...

Maine is the oldest state. Maine is going to need a large number of teachers in the next few years. My wife retires in 17 days. For some reason there is a high turnover in HVAC and there are always job openings. Caution: Maine wages in both fields may be lower than you are accustomed to.

I am accustomed to being in college, so it's gotta be higher for me ...

I'll try asking on an HVAC forum -- that's weird that there's such high turnover. I *heard* that people don't like the no heat calls in the middle of the night. But, we would be more than willing to put up with that to live in the most beautiful state in the country

Couple thoughts...

I don't know specifically about librarians, but you can check www.servingschools.com. They have listings for many schools in maine for job opportunities. Portland school system specifically has laid off a bunch of teachers due to budget cuts, then hired several back through a back door deal.

HVAC - seems one should be able to find work easily with HVAC experience. The air conditioning won't be huge business, but the heating will. Someone who is available 24/7 for emergency service can probably make a good living as we rely heavily on heat for about half the year. It is one thing to not have AC on the 90 degree day, but totally different to have no heat when it is 20 degrees.
