I am a member of the VFW in Old Town and the American Legion Post. At the VFW Post I am the chaplain, and I have been a volunteer bartender off and on. So on occasion, I here some of the stories and opinions of Old Town locals.
Which is not always 100% accurate. But ...
From the mill closing, both organizations have suffered a great loss of income.
Just as RS announced their lay-offs, the VFW had to reduce their hours. We are no longer open 9am to closing six days a week, noon to closing on Sundays.
By losing those jobs, local businesses and organizations do feel the impact very quickly.
Right now the VFW opens 9am to 9pm on some days, noon to 9pm other days and is closed completely in Sundays. Which has not happened since the VFW post was formed back at the end of WWI.

Forest, I think you hereby qualify to be CD/Maine's eyes and ears in OT re: RS. I am seriously interested and I think a few other members of the forum are also.

This weeks paper also says that there is no word on Red Shield opening again or staying closed.

BDN says that Red Shield will be filing bankruptcy.
Their lawyer is saying that shutting down and filing bankruptcy, is not a final closure.

The last employees that were laid off, are still waiting for paychecks.
The lawyers are saying that the decision to file bankrupcy is being debated behind closed doors.
Not enough wood? In Maine? [I doubt it]
Too costly to truck?
Not enough demand?
If I were an un-paid employee, their equipment would be sitting in my garage and
I would be listing it on Uncle Henry's.

There's not enough wood at an affordable price. Red Shield doesn't have the money needed to play in this game.
Yes.
For wood? Fiber is in high demand.
Red Shield is now being called Dead Shield.
