I loved the short story too. I thought the movie was pretty good, except for the ending. Why the filmmaker decided to change the ending, I'll never understand. They should have left well enough alone.

hmmmmm......different strokes, I guess.....I thought the ending made it not your "run of the mill" scary movie and was quite unique and daring, to say the least, even if it didn't end in a hopeful way......

"Where is Southwest Harbor, Maine, anyway? "

Southwest is on Mount Desert Island. It's on what they call, 'the quiet side', meaning it's on the right hand side, or rather the southwest side of the island. Sort of across Sommes Sound from Norteast Harbor.

Stephen King liked the movie ending better than his own.

In the special features on the Mist DVD King talks about it with Frank Darabont, the director, and he was really pleased with the different ending. The disturbing ending made the film all the more horrifying. I find horror movies to be a bit like roller coasters - a safe way to get scared.

PS - Is there really a Shawshank Prison in Maine?

Not that I know of.

A lot of Stephen King's settings are fictional but based loosely on real-life places. Castle Rock is completely fictional.

I live just up the road from 'Salem's Lot.

We just moved to Maine last year, and I don't think any of the 'Salem's Lot movies were actually filmed in Maine. I'm pretty sure the old Tobe Hooper version from the '70s was shot in California, and the TNT version from a few years ago was done in New Zealand, I think.

We live in Brunswick. The last time I read 'Salem's Lot, I paid close attention to the directions King gives in the book to where it is. As near as I can tell, it's sitting right next to Cumberland, which is just a short drive up the road from here.
