July 4th, what does this mean for you?
Well I thought an idea on what you do and or where you go would be a fun topic to discuss. For people like me who don't do much on this day, I was wondering what you all do.

We used to go to Thomas Point Beach, in Brunswick, with a group of our close friends. This year, we will be spending the Fourth in a hotel room in Albuquerque, NM....resting up from our move.

The 4th of July was a biggie for kids when I was coming up; band concerts, parades and fire works and it marked the time the carnival came to our town. Lots of crepe paper decorated floats and bikes and staying up late (after dark) and eating carnival food (which was much less extravagant than the food at fairs these days......no blooming onions or fried twinkies or steak bombs; We did have pop corn, (not kettle corn) cotton candy, salt water taffy french fries with vinegar, hot dogs and hamburgers and perhaps fried dough or funnel cakes.

We usually go down to the 5 minute parade and then maybe cook some lobsters at the camp. We have been known to enjoy an adult beverage or two as well. At night we usually go to the fireworks either in Portland or Freeport. Sometimes we just stay at the camp and watch the fireworks from there. On a clear night we can see Portland, Bath and Harpswell all at once.

We're going to see fireworks with our kids, like we do every year. The town we live in is having an "Old-Fashioned 4th of July" at a local park (although it's not until Sat., July 5th.). There will be a few rides, and plenty of food, then fireworks at dusk. Then we'll go home and enjoy a few cocktails on the deck (if it isn't to hot and buggy!) Should be fun!
Happy 4th of July in advance to all you Maine forum members!

I lived in Winslow before we moved. Supposedly that is the largest 4th "Fest" in the State. Therefore we stayed home and away from the chaos.
For anyone who likes that sort of thing, the celebration actually covers several days and there are bands, street dances, all sorts of activities for families and of course, the fireworks. No alcohol allowed so it stays safe for everyone too.

Barbecue and Beer! Fried clams and maybe a clam boil. Then, its off to a secret lakeside location to set off the box of fireworks sitting by my desk, followed by the 'real' show. The parade is a minor fire truck event, but the tourists are fun.
I grew up with the oldest Independence Day Celebration in the Nation. On a bright, muggy July 4th morning, in 1777, a Colonial Frigate sailed into the harbor and fired a volley of 13 cannon, in full view of a Hessian readout.

For Lynn and I, it will be our first 4th in Maine but also the first away from family and friends here in Pennsylvania. Happy and sad at the same time.
