IIRC I saw something like this in my in laws house in northern NH. They came from IKEA. I suggest looking at toolboxes or and industrial totes supplier. Or contact a local sheet metal shop and ask how much it would cost to have him bend up a few. It might just be a new product for him.

My late father was a minister and a writer...he wrote a piece about a mouse....very much like Moxie's furry visitors. In August of 1978 he wrote:
"I was cleaning out an old cupboard in the tool shed at my camp and I found a bag of nails which was half full of the hulls of some kind of seeds. Apparently a mouse had made his home in the bag during the winter months.
Noting that this was the traditional "Bed of Nails", I was tempted to describe the mouse as a Hindu mystic, practicing some kind of ascetic regime for the good of his soul...Then, I speculated the he might have had the nails so arranged as to protect him from his many enemies, serving a militaristic mouse as a makeshift Maginot LIne...or perhaps it was just that the bag provided essential shelter during the winter cold, with the nails playing little part, negatively or positively, in the choice of a home.
We can never know for sure about the motives and motivations of a mouse...or of men either, for certain. Actually, we may be most confused about our own real, deep purposes. Anyway, the "mystic mouse" served to remind me of the foolishness of trying to judge the actions of my friends, or being too sure about my own saintliness."
Moxie, I am endebted to you and your summer camp mice, for bringing my father back to my mind....that is always a good thing.

Hello BOOMERANG!! :0):0) Thank you!!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR KIND POST!!!
I beleive that you are RIGHT! The report was about
RATS! And YES, I am TERRIFED of MICE, RATS, ROACHES,
etc! The thing that concerns me about MICE, RATS is that
they also carry diseases And they reproduce like
roaches!
Anyway, thanks for your great post! When I see one, I think about what
you mentioned, they are a lot smaller than we are, so they should not scare
me, but they still do
Once again, THANK YOU MOXIE for this thread!
Thank you BOOMERANG! for your input!
Thank you to all of the other posters for the great help as well!!
Take care!
Have a GREAT week!

I've lived out in the boonies for many years, and had the occasional mouse in the house, but never, ever, did I have a mouse in a toilet. They don't swim so well and prefer to stay warm and dry. That's why they will sometimes come into buildings in the late fall, to look for a nice warm place to spend the winter. To a mouse, spending the winter in your house is like going to Florida They just want to find a nice little spot to make a cozy nest, and they'll use whatever they can find to make their nest nicer and cozier. Shredded paper, bits of cloth, pieces of felt insulation, whatever. They don't necessarily seek out particular things; they just use what's closest and available.
There's absolutely no need to be afraid of a mouse. Or mice. Sometimes they'll leave on their own if sufficiently frightened by the inmates or a pet cat or dog. And if really necessary, there are means of removing them permanently. Just remember, they are only tiny little mammals, a million times more frightened of you than you could ever be of them. Imagine if humans were chased by predators 15 stories tall!
That's what you look like to a poor, tiny, scared out of his wits little mouse.
I think the story you saw about city animals in the toilet was about rats. Rats are great swimmers and can in fact travel through watery conduits.
Did you know that pet rats (domestic, not wild, types) make lovely pets? Jack Hanna the zoo guy says they're wonderful for people who can't have a dog, i.e., apartment dwellers. I know people who have pet rats; the critters are smart and can be very fond of their owners.
Don't worry. Sleep well

I could be wrong...and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am!...but aren't metal trash cans rodent-proof? We have several, both 20 and 30 gallons, with lids, and I have stored fertilizers and such in them, never a problem with mice.
These trash cans are quite cheap, and quite roomy, too!

Have you tried the Auction Houses?
I love to go to Houston-Brooks Auction house (you can google them and look online at what's up for the next auction) and have seen the metal cabinets there a number of times. I am thinking of redoing our kitchen with the metal cabinetry- especially the enamel ones. I have been going in person and checking online and they are really good about updating every Wednesday.

We have 4 kitties, so no mice! (An occasional Vole will try to sneak in, but they become a snack rather soon! )

I don't know how to auction. Haggling even makes me nervous. I'll ask my father if he has enough nerve. We have 1 cat and just adopted 2 kittens' but they are loved family pets and we'd never leave them here to fend for themselves! Can't leave cats in an unwinterized camp over the winter.

No, you wouldn't want to leave kitties!
There is no haggling! Just bidding.
On the auctions, what I do is follow online for a couple weeks when what I am looking for is there (right now it's a camel back sofa) and see the following week how much $$ it went for. Then when I see the one I want, you can email your bid -whatever you think it's worth and are willing to pay- and they will notify you if you win!
It's so much fun and you can find some REALLY good deals!

Hello RMOORE007!! Lol! Lol! Lol! THANKS!:0)
 LOL! LOL! LOL!
Cute & funny post! I guess I will just have to get lots of GIN &
VODKA, and get them all drunk!! LOL! LOL!
In my HAPPY DREAM WORLD, I wish I could live in a place that would
not have any mice, rats, roaches, snakes, alligators that is why I
know that I could never live in places like Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico,
Florida, Louisiana, just to name a few LOL! LOL!
(By the way, I do not wish to offend anyone :0) I am sure the above states are just LOVELY!:0) But just NOT for me!:0):0))
Do you think that the GIN & VODKA will work for the other creatures above?
Thanks for the laugh!
Have a GREAT week everyone!
Great thread MOXIE!

....... .......sorry about that. Back to the op's question. I think Ranger has a good idea about metal cabinets at Sears. And don't forget to look at an office warehouse store. They should have inexpensive metal furniture too. From filing cabinets to credenza'a that could be used for food. I dare a drunk mouse to eat through a metal cabinet.
