bangor and surrounding area
Hey All,
I was wondering if you could give me your overall thoughts and details on the following on Bangor and on these surrounding towns
Hamden
Orono
Brewer
Winterport
What about the weather? Is it really extreme like in the teens and single digits in the winter? What about the bugs in the summer?
Thanks in advance

A very nice area.
There will usually be one 'cold' period each winter, not more than a week or two. Otherwise the weather is not terribly bad in the wint-ah here.
Bugs? yes there were some. This year we had no Black fly at all. A few mosquitos but they are gone now.

I grew up (mostly) in Hampden. It's a very nice area. The schools were good, you're close to Bangor, while still being rural. Although Hampden has definately grown since I left.

Cold and bugs; cold and bugs. They always ask about cold and bugs. What is it about cold and bugs anyway? ;-)
You can hunt within 10 minutes of any of those towns. You can fish IN these towns and you might even catch an Atlantic salmon in downtown Bangor. Why it's a veritable utopia here (except for the cold and bugs).

You would think that Maine had cornered the market in both cold and bugs, now, wouldn't you? I think the bugs were about as bad in NC (maybe worse... I have not seen fire ants here) and as for the cold.. yeah, we have winter. So does the rest of New England, Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado(those I know for a fact from experience) and lots of other northern states. I only got here in March, but it didn't seem any different than the other northern states I have lived in, temperature-wise.

If you want to see fire ants go to Eastport. It's almost one GIANT fire ant hill. We've got them at the camp in Charlotte, and I know of cases around MDI. The bug people at UMO can list where they all are, and really like to talk to people.

Dieldren works great on fire ants. I had a fire ant free yard in Florida when I was in the navy. Just wear rubber gloves and wash your hands after applying it.
Oh, the environmental industry doesn't like it and they want fire ants to promote biodiversity? Too bad. Use dieldren anyway if you want to get rid of fire ants.

I didn't realize they were this far north. No, thank you, I do not need to see more! Kept them out of the yard in Beaufort ok, just was a yearly bit of work.
