Default Question about Brunswick Navy Base closure?

What will happen to the base and all the surrounding Navy housing? Does the gov't still own it and lease it to the city or does the state buy it? And what are they going to do with the land, airoprt etc when the base is closed? I'm curious becasue I've never been at a base that is closing. My husband is in the Navy and we are headed to Maine soon for 4 years,so I guess until the base is closed.

Down East magazine had an article about this very thing a few months ago. You might see if they have the article up on their website.

Hi Imissthefall,
The base is scheduled to close in 2011, the surrounding towns have built a commission along with State and Fedreal agencies to address the issues you speak of. I know that the new housing the Navy built in 2001 will be turned over for affordable housing and I just read the GBH, who is the civillian housing management company will be terminating their contract for the Topsham Annex when the base closes. More than likely the Topsham housing will be demolished and redeveloped.
As for the base, there are many companies and government agencies trying to get a piece of the base for redevelopment. I know the Air National Guard, National Guard and other reserve components will probably take over much of the 3300 acres.
You can keep track of the news by visiting www.timesrecord.com which is the local news paper. I believe if you search Google for information you would find the website for the redevelopement commission.
I hope this all helps.

Kyle
