Snakes
The only snakes of any consequence in Maine are lawyers and real estate agents. Sometimes insurance brokers. They're fairly easy to identify, however.

Those particular types seem to be found nationwide!
Did you know that in Florida there are more people with real estate licenses than drivers licenses?

There were quite a few water snakes where I grew up (Wells) that I was led to believe were moccasins, which are poisonous. Hopefully, my mom was just trying to scare me

there are watersnakes in maine. I don't think they bite though. Scares the crap out of you when they sneak up out of nowhere slithering across the water.

The only snakes that I am aware of are garden snakes. I can't remember the last time I saw one it has been years. They usually like to hang out under rocks or in a pile of rocks so if you just keep in mind to be cautious when moving rocks around you should be all set. The snakes usually just go about their business unless of course they feel threatened just like any living thing would do. I am not a big snake lover either but I never worry about them here in Maine. They are more afraid of you than you are of them.

Snakes, or the scarcity thereof
There are no poisonous snakes in Maine. My wife hates snakes, too. But she can go years here without seeing any kind of snake. Usually when we do it's because one of our cats has killed one out in the woods and brought it home to us as a "gift!" You can walk around in the woods in Maine without having to wear heavy snake-proof boots as you would in some of the southern states.
There are some other "nasties" that don't like Maine. Hearing about homes damaged by termites in Maine is very uncommon.
Spiders are also not bad here. According to the University of Maine, black widow and brown recluses do not naturally occur in Maine. They do sometimes ride in on imported produce, but they don't survive the Maine winters.
Ditto for cockroaches. They can live inside buildings of course (and that is more the fault of the occupants than Maine) but they don't survive the winters outside, so they don't come in from the natural environment here. So, no need for polite euphemisms like "palmetto bug" up here.
