just to reply to the ad about the moose working in the woods go to forestnet.com and you can see the picture of the moose and the story that goes with it. you also can go under lumberman.com but you need to subscribe which is free. also punch in logging magazines and you can read the different articles in these magazines. my husband has been in the woods of northern maine ever since he could walk and he could really tell ya some stories from working in the woods to camping, hunting and fishing in the woods.

Welcome to the Maine board!
The moose harnessed to work in the woods is a hoax. Photoshop is a cool tool!

Snake Story
I have a snake encounter for the Snakes in Maine thread. My wife's cousin has a camp on Stetson pond. She said there was a big snake there that kept scaring the kids out of the water. I knew nothing about northern water snakes and figured it was just a big garter snake. I said I would catch it and move it somewhere else. Well, sure enough it showed up the next weekend. It was about 10 feet off the dock. It was about a three footer. The water was shallow so I took off after it with a long handled fish net. It went back to shore soon enough and I cornered it. I had it in the net and I grabbed it's tail. Any of you who have dealt with northern water snakes may be forming a picture in your mind of how things went from there. I have since researched this snake and found that although not poisonous they are very aggressive, and their saliva has an anti coagulant that will cause the multiple bites that they administer to bleed profusely. Well, I got lucky. It didn't look like any garter snake I had ever seen so I was being a bit cautious with it. I had the tail and the snake was kind of on the net. I walked it back to shore and started getting closer to it. I had it in both hands and even have a picture(to be posted soon) with it coiled by my head. My wife's cousin worked at the Discovery museum in Bangor and she called their snake guy. We described what we had and he couldn't believe I wasn't bleeding. I took the snake in to him. It had a big scar on it's head and he thought it may have come from a propellor. Anyway, he ended up being able to use the snake for public display because it was so tame.
I have a black bear story too. Much shorter.

I think this is a great story!
Since you did so well off the dock, you are now ready to run for the legislature.
You will find so many snakes in and around Augusta that you will get to feel all that you want without getting your feet wet!

as a kid i had a scary meeting with a snake,,, and living on a lake, i had one slither into the house early on,, to say hi to the lady of the house,,, after hearing some high pitched screams that could have broke every window in the house, i took the snake outside and ...lets just say he was on the fast track to snake heaven.
most of the snakes i see are water snakes, and one big one (like the picture above) i saw on a golf course at a water hazzard..i was looking for my golf ball at the waters' edge and he coiled up... taken by surprise, the fight or flight reaction kicked in,,,and one solid 9-iron to the head, sent him to the snake promise land.
snakes i put in the same category as sea-gulls...

This is the smallest snake I have ever seen. Took this picture on Monday over in Acadia on the trail around Jordan Pond.

We have two bright green grass snakes and two garter snakes that inhabit our sidewalk. They all feed on ants.
