As I've said many many (many!) times, we took seven teenage girls camping in Baxter State Park. I can't begin to tell you how much fun we had. Girls I didn't think would hike, especially in the rain, were right there with us. The girl who is so afraid of being trampled by moose was on the walkway watching two cows and enjoyed herself. The girls I thought might be too timid to go down Ledge Falls looked it over and down they went. We lucked out with the weather. When we left we drove into hard rain. I prayed for "ok" weather and was blessed with very little rain. When we were at Ledge Falls the sky cleared and the sun came out.
This video was taken while the kids were figuring out where the best places are in the falls. They were still a little timid. Steve stood at an underwater boulder to catch them and keep them off it until they figured out where and how to get out of the current. After they'd been down a few times they'd found the best places and were going down without any hesitation. I wasn't going to go. It was cool even when the sun was out, and I knew the water was going to be cold (it was!) so I went with the intention of taking lots of pictures and staying dry. It looked like too much fun to miss out so I went in fully clothed.
There's a deep hole above this part of the falls. You can start at the top to slide into the deep hole and swim. The current swirls and allows you to swim upstream easily. Mary's Katy and B were diving into the water and swimming upstream underwater. It looked so cool! You can let the current take you to the next slide and keep going.
You can't find this kind of 100% all natural, old fashioned fun in a theme park! YouTube - Ledge Falls
A tip from one of the park rangers - wear cotton socks. They help keep your footing on the slippery ledge. Even the dry ledge is slick.
I love it! Katy had a ball! And you're so right about the old fashioned fun....how many generations of kids have slid down that very spot? This is a great example of what Maine offers it's kids! Thanks again MW for having Katy along!
I have a longer video uploading to youtube now. I was there, I saw Katy wipe out and still, I laugh at her every time I watch it I'll post it as soon as youtube processes the video.
lol....she's such a goof! I still can't get over how she and T are so much alike I've got to get up there to BSP. In looking on the map I discovered that you didn't camp all that far from where we went on the Jeep trip last year....but, it's one of those "you can't get there from here" things! I don't spend nearly enough time in some of those places that we have access to here...
Very cool! Seems like a nice bunch of kids having a ball.
That water is always a bit cold for me, been over that ledge a couple of years ago just because and even in Aug. it was cold enough to do once but no desire to do it twice.
