Default Apple Harvest

I saw an article online yesterday predicting a bumper apple crop in Maine.

Any observations on how the apple harvest is looking this year from where you are in the state??

Love to get some new apple recipes, should you care to share

Apples taste better in drier years. Many of them will be unusually large so the harvest is going to measure well but the taste will suffer in a lot of varieties. I just came back in from looking at my favorite trees.

We have had a problem keeping bug killer on the trees due to the rain. The Japanese beetles have laced out a lot of leaves and we have had some tent catepillars too. Every time I sprayed the trees it rained before the spray could do the job. There are quite a few apples but they aren't pretty.

NMLM what is the tie between cider and donuts? I have noticed a lot of orchards also make donuts in the fall.
They are excellent...I just didn't know if this was an old tradition or how it came about. thanks ...

"Apple Cider Donuts" It's not an "and" thing. Sadly, these triggered my first ever migraine so donuts are a HUGE no for me. You can find recipes for these online.

One of my customers brought in a short case of 40 oz malt liquor bottles filled with his cider from last season. Mmmmm.

I sold him a huge antique oak mill and apple press about 15 years ago. He warned me not to drink a couple and then drive. I wonder why?

Can't wait for our annual October trip.

We usually go apple picking in New Gloucester and eat our fill of doughnuts and dumplings. Then go home with a couple of gallons of cider- yum. Nothing like biting into a crispy Cortland, Rome or Macintosh.
