Default greatest vacation rental stories in Maine

The family is already getting plans together for our next vacation to Maine for the summer of '09. Our last house rental was in Belfast as we have contacts in Waterville area, Standish area and the obligitory day(s) of shopping at Leonwoods' place. We would like to have any recommendations of families that have had great house rentals and the names of the towns you were in. We either would like a "beach" house rental or on one of the lakes (ponds). We would be looking for a minimum 4 bedroom house as we usually have inlaws spending some of the nights with us. Has to be kid friendly as we have young ones. If you also have contact info of the rental agent or owners so we could contact. Thanks in advance.

we use vacationrentals.com to find rental houses in the orlando area. Lots of listings and easy to use. There is a maine section too.

I would suggest the naples/sebago are. Several lakes and close to many things to do.

folks...I can't believe there are not any great trips people are willing to share. Our last trip , we rented a house in Belfast. Had a good time, but it rained the whole week. What beach towns and or lakes would you book again for that perfect vacation?

Since we moved away, we always gravitate back to Pine Point Beach.
From there we venture out on day trips or overnight to visit places we never saw or had the time to visit due to our very young children when we lived in Maine. Always a great time and never any complaints

What about Acadia National Park? It's stunningly beautiful, full of hiking trails, both easy and difficult. You have the ocean, the mountains, it's perfect. The whole island, is fantastic. Bar Harbor, (some think it's too touristy, but if that's what you are, it's perfect), the other towns on the quiet side of the island, so many things to do. Check it out!

right.... and the state is huge with a wide variety of options. Are you thinking you'd prefer to be in the southern/western Maine area, or do you want a slower, quieter pace of northern or eastern Maine?

I used to race a sled dog team of Siberian huskies. I had as many as 18 at one time. They are closely related to wolves. After a wolf pack has fed on a kill they have a sing-along and they all howl in celebration. Huskies do the same. A half hour after they are fed in the evening they all howl for a couple of minutes. It's in their genes.

A couple spent a week on the lake here and had a fine time. They stopped in the hardware store as they were leaving town and the owner asked if they had a good time. They had indeed. They would be back. There was just one problem. They couldn't let the kids out after supper.

Huh? Why Not?

"Well; It's those wolves on the other side of the lake. They might come over on our side and it's just too dangerous."

Everybody in the store cracked up. Those were my Siberians with their nightly sing-along after supper and the sound carried across the lake.

We're thinking of renting our house in Northport (next to Belfast) out for the summer weeks, since we won't be able to sell in this market for what we owe, most likely (we're moving to MA by Dec.)

Can I ask what you paid for the house in Belfast? How many square feet, amenities, etc? Was it ocean front?

Ours is 3-5 bedrooms and would sleep over 10, 2 baths, 3200 sq ft, 6 private acres, ocean views(only from top 2 floors in summer) and mountain views. It's not ocean front, though. I'm not sure if it'd be worth trying to rent out or not. But if we do, we'd of course leave most of the furniture, which is a great reason to buy new!
