homemade woodstove hearth
Hey everyone,
I'm going to be building a hearth to put my woodstove on as I have to get the stove up off from the wood/carpeted floors. I'm thinking about using 2x4's to make a box and then putting durarock down over the top and putting brick down over the durarock. Has anyone here ever made one of these?

I just cut an old piece of carpet and placed it upside down to protect the floor and set used bricks on the carpet. It looked fine. I didn't have a wooden border and the bricks never moved. If I had to do it again I would buy a piece of carpet remnant in an appropriate color and staple it to a wooden frame to mitigate the stubbed toe situation. Just wrap it around the frame and staple on the inside against the bricks where the staples can't be seen.

I just built one for my pellet stove , it's a sandwich of 1/4" plywood,1/4" durarock, and stone tiles all held together with liquid nails.
very easy to build.
The one your planning should work fine just be aware of the weight of the bricks and your stove, you may want to install some extra support under the floor.

I laid 1X2 trim in a 8foot by 8foot square, and filled that with concrete. A 3/4 inch layer of concrete with lots of black pigment in it. In an attempt to simulate dark slate.

i just did that recently, wife wants the hearth to be the same level as the wood floor. when i talk to the wood stove installer that i want to put soap stone on the plywood subfloor(dricore) for the hearth, he said i can not have plywood under the stone. i called dricore rep to find out if thire product can be use under wood stove, they said it should not be a problem with the weight issue, for heat it likes any plywood, it does have 1/16" of plastic waffle backing to keep moisture away from wood.
i end up with 2" stone thick on top of concrete. Don't know why, i see wood stove sitting on wood floor all the time(in picture). this is my first wood stove.

That sounds nice. I just learned how to cut tile with my new wet saw and finished our one for the camp last night.
I used a 2x4 base covered with a sheet of 3/4 plywood. Tiled over that. It actually isn't bad.

pellet stove hearth
Bill - Just going to do the same. Was advised to use 3/8" plywood, durarock, and ceramic tiles. I've never worked with durarock. Any problems?
