Default land tax

I read on one of the posts that if you have ten acres or more, it's considered timber land (or something to that effect) and is taxed at a lower rate. Does anyone know the difference in tax rates? I was originally looking for 5 acres, but if the tax difference is substantial, will consider ten. Many thanks.

That is a special program that you enter your land into to get that tax rate. Forest will be on here later and he knows more about that than I do. He has most of his land in treegrowth status.

You must have at least 10 acres to enter into the tree growth program. If you ever want to put a building on it you better have over 11 acres. I have been involved in Maine land use law since 1973. None of my properties are in tree growth. Think long and hard before you put your land into tree growth. The penalties for withdrawing from the program are severe.
