According to the FBI, Maine is the safest state. No brag, just facts.

Have you gone mad?!?
Don't tell that to the masses! Oh wait, you didn't specify my township or our county, did you? It's all still good. You're forgiven. Whew, that was close.

Maine living
I have lived in Philly during the tough times in the 70's. Los Angeles during the riots of the 80's, Texas during the last seven years of wrongly used imminent domain laws (we left before our house was taken to make another parking lot). I am glad to be now FOREVER in Maine, home sweet home : ).

I can think of more than a few locations in maine that look more like a junkyard than a residential house - your typical "redneck".

Caused quite a forum...had no idea!!
In response to Shadowfax, I don't believe my original post was comparing costs, but merely a way of life. There's a reason Maine's mantra is "The Way Life Should Be" and "Vacationland" graces the license plates.
Where I grew up, a small coastal town in Maine, there were and still are NOT any gangs, murders, and a handful of perverted criminals of whom everyone knew who they were and stayed clear.
My point was that some just don't realize this Utopic existence is real. People who have never experienced it just think I am exaggerating or blind. I have lived in "big" places- no, not like LA or DC- and hopefully never- and those who have never seen what I have- just don't get it. Portland, Maine Shadowfax, is the very southern end of Maine- the "biggest city" in Maine. I wouldn't choose to live there myself- but I would over Jacksonville or Tampa, FL!!!
Cost of living may cost more in Maine, but quality of life is worth it to me. Coldness and winters do get long, but I get just as much cabin fever in the summer down here in Texas with being stuck inside all summer because it's way too hot to go outside.
Whatever, really though- to each his own......it's really better if Maine just continues to be a best kept secret from those who don't know it's best spots.

I still remember the first night we watched the local news after our move here. There was a story about a lady who had hired a couple guys to trim her apple tree and she had reported to the police they had "stolen" all the apples in the process. That was the extent of the crime reported that day. The next night while watching the news, a segment came on entitled "Good News Friday."
That was only 6 years ago and by the way, the local channel we watch, covers the news (and weather) for the entire State of Maine, not just our area. So you folks coming from the larger cities, it will definitely be a very welcome culture change.

Her cow ate my cabbage!!
We don't watch the news here, because not knowing is easier! The more we know, the more want to hide under our beds with doors locked and curtains drawn. No, I'm not kidding one little bit!
