Thank your lucky stars we made it through August. We have had years when it snowed every month; not accumulating snow, just flurries. I'll get a photo tomorrow morning if I have to scrape the windshield.

I've "lucked out" today. Steve is going to Taylor's unexpected scrimmage and bringing home supper because I "have a lot to do in the garden and don't need to think about supper." Works for me. You should see my kitchen this morning. No, really you shouldn't! There are dehydrators on the sideboard, canners, pots, pans, fruit, tomatoes, filled jars to put away and some where in all this mess the all important coffee pot. I don't want to take the bushel baskets to the cold cellar then bring them back up again Friday so I'll set them aside in the kitchen. We can walk in a path for a couple of days. By supper time the stove will be hidden. Take out Chinese sounds really good.
It's cold this morning. It's 50* but it's damp and windy. I love fall!

I heard the frost warning on TV last evening for you folks up north.... these are the kind of nights my Mom used to spread sheets and quilts over the "garden beds" to extend the season just a smidge more and let a few more tomatoes vine ripen...while dad was picking and wrapping green tomatoes and storing them away......
.I loved it when I was a kid, when the baskets of half ripe tomatoes and green ones and funny shaped cukes and ripe yellow cukes, cabbages, onions peppers, beans, were turned into picalilly, chow-chow, relishes, stewed tomatoes, dilly beans, etc. The kitchen had that wonderful smell of picking spice and vinegar and canners full of hot steaming boiling water.
Like putting summer in a jar and setting it to mellow in the pantry at the bottom of the cellar stairs. From the sun light to the dusty domain of spiders and who knows what! Mom would make enough to last thru the year.

ohhhhhhh crap. Cucumbers and zucchini... adding those to my list. And eggplant. Ahhhh the coffee's finally kicking in and the brain cells are firing.
I nearly screamed over a spider yesterday. I leaned into the chest freezer to get strawberries, straightened up and was looking at a spider. I don't know what they catch in a basement and a cold cellar to sustain themselves but this one looked well fed (big!).

We won't get a frost down here yet, but your kitchen sounds like ours! We "buy local" a lot and over the weekend really stocked up on fresh produce! The kitchen is full of canning jars and stockpots, our trusty All-American canner, and filled jars that have not been brought downstairs yet. Most of what we're going to freeze is already in the freezer. Yep, we even have a couple of bushel baskets on the back porch (closed in) waiting for attention.
The kitchen is a mess but the feeling of security from 'having enough for winter' can't be bought at any price! We LOVE fall, too!

me too! I am in my "Maine" knit red cotton turtleneck -- the one I bought last year at this time, sweating like the proverbial pig in NC -- for job hunting on my trip north.
Your kitchen sounds like mine on many a fall morning... especially when the first frost crept in unawares and -- YIKES!! -- it all had to come in NOW. Steve is a deah...

I have a poem about these days, will DM it to you since it has seen print...
Before we started homeschooling, I would keep the kids home on the morning of first frost -- they always wanted to help and to enjoy the day and I can't say I blamed them. there was always a trip to my favorite farm market too, to take advantage of their "end of season" sale on peppers and stuff we didn't quite grow enough of.
