Brewer, Maine Lodging?
How come there's so many motels in Brewer? Some with over 70 rooms.. was this a tourist destination at some point? Just trying to figure out why there are many motels in this area.. I know it is close to Bangor, but Bangor has 18+ hotels/motels itself In terms of lodging, are the hotels/motels in this area run down now? I am looking into buying one and needed more information on the area. Thank you

People heading down east get off the interstate and don't want to drive on to their destinations at night. There are several reasons. They want to enjoy the view in the daytime. They don't want to encounter a moose at night. They don't want to risk car trouble at night on that lonely road and they don;t want to attempt it in the winter at night. They head out in convoys after breakfast.
Of course, those are the people who view Maine as a wilderness and a frontier. Those of us who live here just use those motels during basketball tournament week when we make our annual pilgrimage to the big city.

Not to mention the fact that when many of those Brewer hotels were built, many of the Bangor ones didn't exist! Few could have imagined at that time what those cow pastures would become....

My wife and I stayed in one about 3 years ago during a stay in Bangor, there was something going on in the area and all the rooms in Bangor were booked. The place was pretty runned down and the room was non-smoking but reeked of cigarettes. There are also two brand new hotels that just opened in Bangor, so I don't know what that will do for area vacancy rates.
