Did I mention I also keep guns and too much ammo?

Yes, there are... we stopped and looked at some last year, but did not have our place yet. K would love one, but I am not sure about it, as I am likely to be the primary dog-handler as his health deteriorates. I lived down the street long ago from a fellow that had one, and a full blood German Shepherd as well. He walked them down the street not long after I had moved into the neighborhood and I met them, quite by surprise, as I turned from digging in my flower bed to meet both eye-to-eye. They were both beautiful animals and, the owner said, well behaved. I petted and rough-housed with both for a bit on my lawn (they were on leash) ...but they were with their owner and not on their turf...

You might want to be cautious about this.
As a long-time breeder and trainer of German Shepherds, I can attest to their loyalty and family protection. If well-bred they are also very gentle with children, and our grandchildren have been quite rough (when young) with our dogs, who never snapped or showed annoyance.
Many people are attracted to the timber wolf, assuming it is a fierce animal that would also be protective of the family and property. Not so. If 100% wolf, they are wild animals and have no particular allegiance to humans. If 50/50 Shepherd cross, all bets are off and it depends on the breeding stock and what a particular animal happens to inherit. Genetics is largely a toss of the dice. While some love "designer animals", my caution is more directed to those with children. These are powerful dogs and have been known to injure or even kill a small child - all while providing no special protective loyalties to owner or property.
My strongest advice to anyone here is to know your breeder. If you decide to go with a pure-bred Shep, you will get an intelligent dog that trains easily and will be a very good watchdog while being safe with your own children and the neighbors'. If you go with a full or part-breed wolf, you are getting a wild animal. Caveat emptor!

Lincoln crime is due in part to drugs and some of the culprits are in their late 40's and 50's. Its very unfortunate that it has come to this. I never thought I'd feel safer in my home state than I would in my beloved Maine.

These are the type of kids who come to school and sleep. There is a hangout in town for the youth in a well lit parking lot. Occasionally the police will make there presence known around that area, but not enough. I've seen guys dealing dope out of there cars while down there and I wish there was a way they would get caught. Sometimes the police around here seem to "lax".

I hear some of the creaps have gone to East Grand to lay low for a bit................someone should drop a line to the state police they are probably looking for them.

I was told in the police academy a great deterrent is a huge dog bowl chewed to &*%# on your front steps. Doesnt matter if you have a dog or not, people notice it and think twice.
Here in Assachusetts where I work, we have had the same types and numbers of crime as you all have been chatting about. The economy sucks, people are desperate, and there is no respect for each other any more. Be aware of your surroundings, lock your doors. a$$hats notice stuff like suction cup marks on your windshield (from a GPS mount). I you dont have an alarm on your house, get stickers that say you DO. Take valuables out of your vehicle when your not in it. Bottom line, if someone wants something you have, they WILL get it if they want it bad enough, but you dont have to make it easy for them. A$$hats troll the social network sites like Facebook for people who post that their gonna be gone for a week or a day.Its not hard to look up where someone lives. Its sad that we have tolive on the defensive nowadays, but its a sign of the times. Police and fire are usually the first two depts that get cut during budget crunches, but the workload doesnt change.
I am all for being armed, I carry on AND off duty, all the time. But please, take firearms courses if your new to gun ownership. Heck, if its been a while since you fired one, take a refresher course!
P.S. I have been trying to get a job in Maine for the last three years, no luck yet but I'm not giving up!!!! I WILL live in Maine!!!!
No matter what keep you and your families safe, and look out for each other. Be a sheepdog, not a sheep. We all gotta watch out for the wolves.
