Blue Hill, Maine
Am thinking about moving to Blue Hill and taking a job at the hospital there. What can anyone tell me about the area? Housing? Crime? Etc.?

Nice village, very rural, lot of retirees have settled in the area. It's on Blue Hill Bay, just across from Mount Desert Island, and in the middle of some of the finest sailing grounds in the world, so if you're into boats you'll love it.
Low, low crime. Housing prices are considered high for Maine because it's coastal and popular with retirees, but folks from away consider the prices to be bargains. Nearest town of any size is Ellsworth -- theaters, big box stores, etc. There are some very nice restaurants in Blue Hill. Much busier in summer than winter, of course, when many shops and restaurants take long breaks.
One word of caution: If you're looking for an urban experience, you'll have to drive a long way to get it -- Bangor (one hour) or Portland (three hours). Boston is not within day-trip distance.
Bangor is the nearest large commercial airport, although there's a very good small airport in Trenton, outside Ellsworth.

Thank you so much for the info. It will help greatly. Sounds like it has not changed much in the last few years.
Can you tell me more about housing availability for a Travel RN, her husband, and their 90 lb lap dog?

blue hill
first of all, blue hill is awesome area...part of deer isle,,,going towards sedgewick, stonington, etc, one of the most beautiful places in maine!
i'd suggest,,,visiting the area, get a "feel" for the area, and also, pick up some real estate guides of the area, downtown blue hill, im sure is pricey, but there are neighboring towns (orland, penobscot, for example, that may be equitable (housing prices)
good luck!!

HI, my husband was in the B.H. Memorial Hospital for 4 days last week. We feel he had great care and were truly impressed with the hospital itself. The nursing staff were especially efficient and caring. The food was even good! BHMH is small, but clean and seems to be well run. Blue Hill itself is a small village, and has a busy street running through it from Deer Island to Ellsworth. Nice shops, new Rite Aid. Nearby village of West Blue Hill might have more reasonable prices. WE hope to return for a longer and happier visit. Good luck.
