what's a toll?
lol.... the turnpike system has one, but it's not hefty... the people further south can give you specifics... but seeing as north and east of Augusta they don't seem to spend any $ on our roads we don't need the tolls!

El, you had mentioned joining AAA anyway for a discount, which does pay off with hotels, truck rentals etc. Once you join ask them to do a "triptik" for you. It doesn't cost a thing once you're a member. It's a personalized map just for you. They can redirect through any areas of construction that mapquest or yahoo maps won't recognize. Also you can avoid tolls, big cities or pretty much request whatever route you are looking for, be it most direct or scenic, etc. Check them out, they're well worth the expense and come in handy for a road trip!
I've also never had a problem finding pet friendly hotels, I will post a link once I find it in my email.

NY tolls are atrocious!! I think we spent more toll $ in just NY than the rest of the trip combined. We will be contributing to the NY economy again though because we will drop down from Canada into Buffalo and then cruise on home.

El,
I hope you are doubling the cost of fuel for this trip. And tolls will be double too.
What routes did you take on the trip up before? Perhaps we can all put our heads together and find ways around different areas.

EL from houston get to Tennessee and hit I-81, it is toll free, plus you stay off the NE corridor, then I87, I90 and I495 around Boston. The only tolls you hit will be NH and of course some in Maine. It is a beautiful drive, and you stay out of large cities. You pick up I-95 almost in NH, and it is smooth sailing. I95 is a mess.....

I'll add my "amen" to that.. but then coming from NC there wasn't much of a choice... picked our time as best we could to avoid DC peak times... but then I was in the lead and (both trips to ME) I went through NY.
Heck I learned to drive in LA as a 16 YO... both my dad's car and I survived... LOL still feel invincible at times.

If it were me, I'd go up to Nacogdoches and then to Texarkana where I'd catch US 30 east to Memphis, then US 40 east through Nashville and Knoxville, then US 81 north all the way to Scranton, PA. Just out of Scranton take US 84 east to 90 east to 495 north to 95 north and on up like the other post said.
This is the route I used two or three years ago- biggest trouble spot I ran into was road construction in Knoxville...but hopefully they've finished that by now. There won't be any tolls untill you get to US 90 and you'll avoid NYC and have a nicer trip. You'll have another toll near Portsmouth, NH and another just north Of Kittery, ME.
There are more tolls on 95 between Portland and Augusta and if you want to save a few bucks you can catch 295 at Portland, the truckdrivers call it "the poor man's road". It meets back up with 95 just south of Augusta (try to time it so that it isn't "rush hour") when you get on in Portland, you'll have to drive a little slower and its a bit bumpy and curvy as you go through the city but once you get beyond it, it's OK. They were paving the southbound side this Summer, I don't know if they did or will do the northbound side.
Speaking of "rush hour", you'll want to try to avoid them for Memphis, Knoxville (TN), Wilkes Barre/Scranton (PA) and especially Hartford (CT)- those are the worst ones...oh, and 95 between 495 and the Portsmouth (NH) toll in the late afternoon/evening.

That actually sounds like the way we came last time. I'll have to go back to mapquest and check all those roads. And note to self: When we get into Calais, call Mary to get exact directions to the house so we don't scare the neighbors!
