greater bangor area (Hampden vs Orono)
Hi Everyone!
What community do you think would be the best for a young family to settle in? Hampden or Orono? Do the towns have different feels to them, what about a difference in the people these two towns attract? Thanks!

Orono is a college town.
Have you driven through them at all?

Hampden has better schools and you can boat to the ocean from Hampden. Hampden has a higher income population and better homes in general.
Orono is indeed a college town and old mill town along with Old Town. They are on the same island.

If you can afford it you should check out Hermon. It's about the same distance away from Hampden and has become extremely popular with families with young children.

Hampden would definitely be my choice over Orono. We lived in Hampden a few years ago and it's very nice, good schools, and as NMLM stated, you can take your boat from the public landing right down to the open ocean. Very nice.
Hermon was just starting to see significant growth back at that same time. I would definitely take a look at the area.

Orono has incredible schools, but the taxes are double that of Hampden. Homes are are limited in Orono, except when the college students move out, then their is quite a few apartments. Being so close to the U of Maine your utilities will stay on during the winter storms...

Think about Veazie or Glenburn if you have the money.
