^The last two Post summarize my feelings in a nutshell. 99% of the time the problem is you, not everyone else.

After living in the Caribou/Presque Isle area since 1987 I can say that sometimes this is 100% true. Before everybody gets all jumpy here let me explain. When Loring Air Force Base was active in Limestone there was a very large number of Airmen who were stationed there that thought it was the end of the Earth. Most were young and this was the first real time away from family and friends. There was a LOT of remarks and comments made to the local population of how different things were and how much better it was "back home". Some took it to levels that were totally uncalled for and downright offensive. To the point of questioning everybodies intelligence and family tree. That left a bitter taste for a lot of the population that was anywhere close (Within 50 miles) of the base. Young, and from away? The immediate thought was that you probably didn't want to be there, and the only thing you wanted was some fun from a local girl while you were waiting for orders the heck out of Dodge. That was true in MANY cases, but not all the time. I had many friends out to the base and everybody ran into that once in a while. Some for years afterwards, even though they got out of the Military and settled down to marry and have family right there close to her parents. I think it was kind of like telling a kid they are not "right" all the time, after a bit they start to believe it themselves even if it isn't true.
The last few years there has been FAR less of that attitude showing up and mostly just from those who are stuck in their ways and older. Most people 50 and younger have no problem with people, no matter where they are from originally. As for the posts persiamotorman has made, I will have to go along with Mollysmiles idea that "troll" just might fit them to a "T".

I live in Gorham and just love it (only been here 7 months) but couldnt be happier with my new home town. It is a charming town.....on the edge of rural areas and in proximity to Portland. The location of the University of Southern Maine campus in town provides the enrichment of concerts and plays . There are beautiful older residential neighborhoods and lovely new developments. The feel of Gorham is very much town.....friendly, low crime, beautiful scenery. (The commute to Portland is busy!....but I am retired so I just avoid those times.)
I also really like Saco. I love the downtown area along the river and the victorian neighborhoods just out of downtown. Saco is a small city rather than a town....it has rail connection to Boston; is only about 30 mins. from Portland.....and has ocean access......it really is a nice little city.

Hey people. We just moved from Taunton Mass to central Maine. On disability and poor, so had nothing to lose. We just said let's pack up and go. The crime in Taunton was terrible, like most towns around there. I was bought up in Berkley and Lakeville, the boonies back then. Learned to live poor because we were poor. Gotta be poor or very rich to live here. But we love it here. We found a nice place in a small town with a yard! And people are down to earth and helpful. We won't go back for anything. Hoping to get together with a couple of our friends from home and get a small farm. Grocery stores are expensive. We have to drive 25 miles to Wally World once a month and stock up.

^I grew up in Assonet. I know what you mean. They've changed over the past few years and continue to change. I'd compare Lewiston to Taunton for anyone who doesn't really know much about the place. If you're living on lower incomes, there are few places more comfortable than Maine. Taxes are high, but you can get a lot more with a little money here than in S.E. Mass. Just wait until the commuter rail opens down there... prices will go even higher.
