About that "interstate".......we went all over Portland trying to find I-95. We were on it several times before realizing it WAS the interstate!! We were one of only a handful of vehicles on it, so we thought for sure it was just a local road. You call that an interstate?

But we chose Rt 1 because the whole purpose of our trip was to check out towns on the coast. We went all the way up the coast as far as Acadia. We'll be making that drive MANY times over when we get settled. It's breathtaking!

Flying into Logan Airport and taking the Express bus to Bangor is usually the cheapest by far, in addition to being the fastest and most convenient. The express bus drops you at the station across from BIA (Bangor International) with all it's rental cars, and they will pick you up at the station. From there you can take 9 or 1 into our fair city.

I always enjoyed driving up US1 just because that was how we always went when I was a kid.

Boston - Bangor by bus 4 -5 hours. Doesn’t cost all that much.

I suggest flying into Logan in Boston and taking the AMTRAK Downeaster to Portland then renting a car for the rest of the trip. The Maine coast east of Bar Harbor is effectively deserted from now till next summer. Great trip in a great time of year.

Why not fly into Eastport? I have many times. Well you need a plane or someone with a plane.

Good comments under additional remarks about the deer in the runway! The population through there and back over through Estes Head is huge!

Eastport has a 75 x 4000 foot runway. Takes all kinds of acft. Just watch the deer and the gulls. We had a Cessna Citation in town for a while after hitting 7 (yes, seven) of them on landing. Look up KEPM.

Sounds like approaching planes need to strafe the runway on the first pass before landing!!
