We will be coming up to do a house hunting trip soon. We figured to fly into Bangor and rent a car. Is there a better way? Sans taking a puddle jumper to Eastport and risking death-by-seagull.

Yes. Fly into Bangor and rent a car. Search the Maine forum for the thread about directions from Bangor to Eastport. I doubt there are many options in existence that are not mentioned in that thread.
In the winter, I would drive Rt. 9 to Calais, then Rt. 1 to Perry and 190 to Eastport.

I would go down Route 1/1A in winter. There are towns with houses along the way in case of trouble and no moose.  May be just me but I feel safer and it's about the same amount of time.
