Hello,We would like to know in Northern,Maine are there places where we could totally be off by ourselves and be lost,in a good way?We see there aren't really any wilderness area where vehicles aren't allowed,so we were wondering if there would be places to camp by ourselves, not in campgrounds. Also could you please tell us how far the mountains go North,East & West in Maine,we want to visit, but don't have much of an idea where the mountains really run,we will be in up in the Northern area.

Thank You Very much for your help!

LOL, So called "wilderness areas" with no motorized access are springing up all over the place thanks to the likes of Roxanne Quimby, the AMC and the MWC, various hunting clubs and individuals.
There are mountains all over western, central and northern Maine. Get a Delorme Atlas and head through any of the North Woods gates. There are plenty of primitive campsites all over the place.
The Allagash, St. John's and Big Bog area are cool. You can camp at numerous sites on the shore and islands on Moosehead and feel isolated. Plenty of moose in all these regions.

What? I'm not sure why you think that at all.... Does that mean that you're thinking we have roads everywhere? A great deal of Maine is still not accessible by roads.... to me that means ALL of those areas are areas where vehicles aren't allowed...
Try looking at the state through google maps, maybe that would help.

Just park beside the road in Monson and walk the Appalachian Trail toward Mount Katahdin. It's called the 100 mile wilderness. so you can walk to your heart's content. Bring a good map.

We talked to Aroostook County Tourism, and they said the North Maine woods are gated and if we wanted to leave late at night,we'd need to knock on a door where the loggers sleep to be let out.We are wondering are there any other place up North where we don't even have to bother with dealing with any of that. You know just be off in the hills,no time limits or have to answer to anyone! Thanks for all of your replies!

Very true.
Sometimes ( of course true and humor ) Route 9... you feel about the same when you've been driving it with out any cell reception.... that's almost isolated.
Actually Maine is huge on what your talking about. I don't know about the southern parts... it provides alot of things to do with shopping and business.. but up in my area.. as well as the ones mentioned in quote... there are lots offered.
