Dog Friendly Rentals
Me and my family are looking to relocate to Maine in the near furture. We want to rent a place for awhile before we buy or build. I am having a very hard time finding any rentals that will accept dogs. Is Portland not a dog friendly city?

No-one has answered this question, so let me pose a different one. What about dog friendly hotels? Which ones should we focus on?

El, try all of the Marriott chains and Extended Stays. (Sorry, I meant to get back to you on that earlier)
To the OP- Yes, Portland is a very dog friendly city, just not so much for renters.

Try craigslist! I've found many pet-friendly rentals on that site... Good luck!

I wonder if you'd find that if you placed an ad you'd get some response? I think that if I were a landlord and had a nice place available I might reply to someone needing a rental that includes pets rather than just make a blanket statement that I would accept pets. Depending on how you were to word your ad, you could come across as a long time responsible pet owner who understands that sometimes it's difficult to rent to those with pets, but that you are an exceptional tenant. It would make me stop and think--if someone takes the time to do that then this is a huge priority for them, and they're really searching to find to best possible place. I'm sure you wouldn't convince someone who is firmly thinking "no pets", but you might find the person who would rent to a person with pets if the circumstances were right.

As far as motels go, here's what I can tell you. We stopped with our dogs at the Super 8 in Kittery once about 7-8 years ago. The EconoLodge in Freeport takes pets. Some of the motels on Odlin Road in Bangor do. The Motel East in Eastport does not. Since we don't use motels much in Maine, that's about all I know.

Oh, we'll be in hotels between here and Maine. I think Tuscaloosa, AL, Roanoke, VA and Bridgeport, CT. Problem for us is that our "pet" is a 90 pound Great Pyranese. She's not just a little lap dog, so I'm a little concerned about her being accepted. Our first thought was that she'd be cozy overnight in a large kennel inside the box of the moving truck. Then, we realized it's going to be COLD when we move. So, she has to be inside. We also have two kitties and 3 kiddos. The hotels will NOT be happy to see us coming! Gotta get it all worked out.

I believe it's illegal for pets to travel in moving trucks - unless I'm misunderstanding what you are saying.

When we traveled we found Jamison Motels (throughout the south) to be the absolute best for pet friendly and decent sized rooms etc. and secure and clean......Motel 6 proved to be so nasty we didnt stay.....our experience with Days Inn was no better. In South Portland Maine...we stayed a week at the Howard Johnsons.....waiting for closing on house......they were great....side door to lots of lawn and woodsy area to walk dogs....we had two dogs and they were fine there. We dont have a Grand Pyrenees but one average sized dog and one small......If I recall at the Jamisons....you did have to troupe thru the lobby......at the howard johnson's there was a side door at the end of the hall and we got the room close to that door. The dogs nver even saw the lobby. When we went out to breakfast we left the dogs in the room and told the maid....Do Not Disturb. They were fine with that.

Really? I'll have to look into that. I'm not sure what the difference would be from the back of a pickup truck. We were actually planning to let her ride in the van as much as possible, so she won't be scared. But the kennel will be necessary for overnight no matter where the kennel is located.
