Now, on the subject of nekkid, to paraphrase the great Lewis Grizzard from Atlanta: "Naked is when you're not wearin' no clothes. Nekkid is when you're not wearin' no clothes and you up to sumpin." His books were good for the most part.

Heheh...the nekkid thing always gets me - my hubbie, being Texan with his dad being from Kentucky, says 'nekkid'. He has to concentrate for 30 seconds in order to pronounce it 'naked'. I tease him endlessly for it

Don't feel alone in having your vehicle targeted because of bumper stickers... It's amazing how intolerant the "progressive" liberal crowd is around here.

In this particular spot, anyways (backwoods East Machias). Being newly 'from away', we have not been welcomed in the year since we arrived, and have had quite a bit of aggression taken out on us, including things stolen from our yard, our vehicle broken into, our house burglarized, and even insults thrown at the post office because of the bumper stickers on our car (which are mostly liberal, that is to be expected in this conservative spot). It has shattered my little dream of returning, though my parents are an hour away and I'm glad to be close to them. It's my hubbie I feel bad for, as he's never gone through anything like this in his life out on the West Coast, and I feel to blame for dragging him up here where people have been less than kind with him (he's a Texan and is all about friendliness!!). I know other parts of the state are changing, and others are still stuck in the same rut. Thankfully we'll be moving to the Ellsworth area in January and are hoping for better luck there. We've spent a lot of time up there and have found a much more colorful and varied array of people (and friendly and open-minded!), and think we will be happier there.
It's quite a risk, moving back, but I took it. I don't regret it one bit, as I love this place. I just need to go a bit closer to a bigger liberal population I guess Which is what led me out West from here as a kid...but gotta find a compromise - small progressive city on the coast. That's it for me!

If you can't find liberals in Maine you're not looking very hard!

Maine is pretty insular in it's outlook. This is not to say people are unfriendly, but the whole outlook of the state 'the way life should be' kinda highlights the prevailing attitude.
Look through some of the posts here about anyone who, for example, tries to open a new restaurant. You'll hear how horribly yuppified it is, and how it's not as good as what was there before.
It can also be awkward in a business sense. People are very resistant to experiences from outside Maine, even when they're trying to expand beyond new England.
Part of the attraction of Maine is that it hasn't become like the rest of America, part of the frustration with Maine is that it hasn't become like the rest of America.

Use a heat gun or hair dryer to get the plastic off. WD-40 on a rag will take off the adhesive. The adhesive is a bit tough but the WD will take it off if you let it soak in a bit. I took mine off last week. I did put a "Palin" sticker on my truck cap though! People generally don't care what you have for stickers on your car. I still see Kerry stickers.

Thanks! Who knew! Ya gotta love WD-40. Stuff is incredible! If you get an oily stain on a shirt or pair of pants from salad dressing, etc., drip or spray some WD on there and run it through your wash on the HOT water setting with regular detergent and the oil stain disappears. Ask me how I know this. lol Just another Mahtha tip... now back to the regularly scheduled show....

We'll take traditional restaurants thank you very much. Go to Boston or New York for the enlightened gormet experiences.
Ask the sushi bars how they do against a traditional place like Cole Farms in Gray. They sit and scratch their heads wondering why there are so few enlightened people living in Maine. The fact is Mainers in general don't eat bait. They catch lobsters with it!
Places that make good traditional Maine food do well. The "yuppie" places come and go....rather quickly. The fact is the new place probably ISN"T as good as the place that was there before and the Mainers are incredulous that anyone would try to sell bait or llama testicles in a restaurant then wonder why no one goes there!

ROFLMAO!!! I love both kinds of restaurants.
Funny, growing up in Massachusetts, diners are for the blue collar mill workers by and large. Girls, teens, and families didn't even think about going in one.
When we were stationed at Ft. Dix, diners became a completely new experience. I really miss the one in Bordentown. Mastoris. They go through 36,000 eggs every week! Imagine that! It's got an enormous menu and it's all good eats. The building is fun because it's just like New England... rambling addition after addition. Tons of comfort foods on the menu and the place is packed, 7 days a week. They even hold wedding receptions there in one of the rooms!!!
Local color is always the best.
