I have not changed spending habits - I have always been this cheap.

I also knew how Zymer did his $1 a day - sometimes we need those times to broaden our minds, and change some habits. And he's right, it's all about choices, what is important to one, is not to another.

Someone asked about how to lower their food budget - I suggest looking at Zymer's menu - homemade soup and a hunk of warm bread makes a meal. It's the bread that does it...a bowl of soup for dinner didn't do it, but add homemade, warm bread...now it's a meal. After learning that one, I started making and serving bread with a number of meals, and it cut the expense of the meal. People will eat one serving of meat rather than two, if warm bread is on the table. The leftover was toast for breakfast - no more cereal here.
The grocery shopping and cooking I have always considered fun, not work. And the bill per meal was the score card.

MW - where do you get your wheat berries?

And then there is the feed store, too. Get a 50# bag of rolled oats and you now have 50 pounds of oatmeal. If it's not fine enough, just put a half cup or so in a blender and whirl it for a few seconds. Good as anything you get at the grocery store for a whole lot less. Great for breads, cookies, cereals, meatloaf and thickener in stews and chowders.

Lots of people are opposed to this means of cutting corners and I don't suggest anyone go where they don't want to go. Just tellin' ya what i have done in the past and will do again if I ever find another feed store that sells bulk feeds.

I think that's a great idea, if it comes down to it! There are many people in Haiti eating cookies made of clay mud, salt, & shortening to survive. I'm sure they'd be very appreciative for oatmeal cookies!

Usually at the health food store. She'll order 50 pounds for me. I'm going to try Honeyville. Hard red winter wheat is $51/50 pounds. Shipping on all orders is $4.59 regardless of the size of the order.

We have bought wheat berries from Blue Seal before, and from the health food place in Bangor.

Hoping for another option.

Handling these whole grains, is so much different from handling berries. There is a great deal to learn in how to do it.

There is no lowering of any standard or having to eat animal feed to survive. This is an often overlooked means to buying bulk oatmeal that people who have never had livestock might not know about.

IMHO- pretty sure those Haitians landing upon the shores down here daily didn't have a blender at home when they set sail upon their rafts.

That's a whole new subject you might want to post in one of the Soflo forums.
