On October 9 I left PA with my family and we started driving up the coast. We made several stops along the way in New York and Mass. We got to Maine on Friday and immediately fell in love. We spent the day driving around and eventually making our way to Bangor.
Bangor is great little city. It reminds me of Greensburg, PA but not as congested and nicer looking. Everyone was super nice I was surprised at how good the prices of everything were. Food was about the same as Western PA. Gas was a good 20 cents cheaper - more at places.
We stayed at the Fireside Inn - easily the nicest hotel of our trip and likely the nicest hotel we've ever stayed at. They were "pet friendly" and made a really enjoyable experience.
The roads were all amazing compared to PA. The state is also not only beautiful but CLEAN. We don't have a terrible litter problem in PA (not like WV) but we barely saw a piece of litter in Maine.
We spent a lot of time in Bangor before heading up to Orono and then over to Hancock. We eventually started down the coast (hyw 1, I think?) and it was just stunningly beautiful. All of the towns we passed through were so quaint and welcoming. A big change from life in the "rust belt".
The people of Maine were amazingly friendly. Actually, everyone in New England was very nice except for our day on Martha's Vineyard, where the people were pretty standoffish. But Maine was the best. We met so many nice people.
Needless to say, we fell in love with Maine. We've love to move there in a few years, but obviously that requires a lot of research and work. But we hope to visit again before then. I'd love to spend a lot more time there and explore the state further.
I just wanted to let everyone know that all of us were EXTREMELY IMPRESSED with your lovely state and its people.
