My Brother uses a model 99 in 300 Savage....he paid $150.00 for it about 25 years ago.
He loves it and has shot several deer with it! Try Guns America!

Yeah, I'm kinda bummed. I looked at one at KTP for $425. The stock was beat up so I hesitated. I really wanted one with the sculpted forearm. It appeals to the artist in me. I bet most of the old ones are resting on walls in rich homes along with the vintage skis and moth-eaten moose mounts..

I saw one one on Guns America for $500. Again , not the forearm I'm looking for. I'm told the Ruger is a great "deerslayer". I'll just wait. If it's meant to happen an opportunity will arise.

I always used either my Winchester 94 in good old 30-30 or my Winchester .270. Depending on the types of area I was hunting in. A bit more open and the .270 was the rifle of choice, a bit closer and thicker and the 30-30 was with me. Both great rifles and calibers. The 30-30 is open iron sights and the .270 has a 4-12 X 50 scope. Dead on at 200 yards and throws a 1 3/4 5 shot group.

Really like that .260 as well though. Very nice shooter.

Oh yeah, I plan on getting out here in a couple of weeks. This area is LOADED with deer. Of course there are so many of them they tend to run smaller than the ones back in Maine do. Still hitting the fishing in good shape and the steelhead are starting to run, so those come first .

Excellent!! Sounds like fun! Are you allowed more than one deer in Michigan?

Yes finally. Due to the number they have gone to one each for archery, gun, and blackpowder seasons. If you have a young hunter, there is a youth season as well and I think they are allowed 2, but not positive. Doe permits are given out by lottery first and any extra ones are sold first come-first serve where you buy your license. When I was a kid it was the same as Maine except a shorter firearm season. Still only 2 weeks long (Nov. 15th to the end of the Month). Which can be a bother because that is usually the fat part of the Steelhead run on the rivers as well. Deer hunting in the mornings, Steelie fishing late morning into the afternoon, then catch the evening Deer movement, and end it all with an hour or two of nighttime Steelie fishing again. Have I said how much I LOVE fall!!

They call that old Ruger .44 Magnum the Deerslayer and it lives up to its name. My wife has one. I bought it for her new for $99. It says Deerslayer on the original box.
