Birth Records for Kittery
I'm having trouble finding out my birth records. It's very confusing.
I was born at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth and my father was stationed at Pease AFB in 1961. I've alway used Kittery,Maine as my POB.
Anyone know the scoop on this and where to look for birth records.
I live in Spokane,Wa now but always miss New England!

Good luck!

mermaid is correct!
If you were born in Portsmith, then that is your place of birth. They should have your records...call the town clerks office.

Thanks for the help! I was told by my mother that the naval part is a part of Kittery. My other brothers use Dover,NH as their POB.
Thanks You, Greg

Apparently the Naval Shipyard is Maine, the Naval hospital is NH.

The only description of the naval hospital at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that I can find online dates to 1918 and states that the hospital was on the shipyard property, which is in Kittery, Maine. If that's the case, your birth certificate would not be in Kittery, it would be in Augusta at the Office of Health Data and Program Management (the old Vital Statistics Bureau). Go to:
Vital Records
Alternately, call an existing naval hospital nearest you and ask what they do with their birth and death records. I don't think there's a central U.S. Navy registry of births in naval hospitals, but I could be wrong.
Hope this helps.

My younger son was delivered by the duty flight surgeon at Quonset Naval Hospital in Rhode Island. That is what's on his birth certificate. In days of yore, a boy born on a warship was called a "son of a gun".
Strangely enough I never thought of that in a family context until just now. I bet the records of the Portsmouth Naval Hospital are still at Portsmouth.

The reason why you were born at the Naval Hospital is Pease AFB Hospital did not have a maternity ward. So if you were born at the Naval Hospital that means you were born in Kittery, Maine. My father was stationed at Pease AFB, and I was born at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Kittery, Maine.

Here's a scan. I never noticed the stork in the watermark? Does it look like your b-certificate?
My mother says the same thing about Pease AFB not have a maternity ward. That seems very strange to me. I am proud to be born in Maine!! When I was stationed at Ft. Devens,in Mass. in 1982-83, I went up to Kittery and all the people are just fantastic! Ate the heck out of Lobster too!!! I am thinking of moving back.
