Mosquitos in November??
For months I've battled with mosquitos and for months I've looked forward to fall when they'd be gone. (We were told mosquitos were supposed to die off when temps began to drop.) And for a while they seemed to be gone. But lately there seem to be a whole new 'batch' of them and they're swarming around our windows and even in our gargage trying to get into the house. (Levant)
Is this typical/normal? Do they wait till it's bitter, frigid cold before going away? Or do they survive the cold and hang around in some places all year?! Say it isn't so!

They don't "die". they sort of hibernate. Warm temps bring them back. They'll be gone again once temps get cold.

Our mosquito trucks are still running. The kids don't go outside after 5pm. My son is very allergic to mosquito bites and gets HUGE whelps that have been known to swell his entire eye shut just from a little bite on his eyelid. They're awful here.

Hope you've taken this into consideration in your move to Maine. They are the state insect!

I thought they were the state bird and the chickadee was the state insect ???
My last house in Harpswell was southern exposure. Every sunny afternoon all winter long all kinds of flying things would come back to life. I had tons of lady bugs. Swarms of them in my house. Which offended me a lot. I'm not a fan of bugs regardless of their gender.

Those new winter mosquitoes were developed unintentionally at the University of Maine. They seem to have antifreeze in their circulatory systems.

Honestly, I assumed they'd be dormant 6-9 months out of the year there. Here, we deal with them year round. Not so dormant? We'll have to keep up with the repellant spray!

The honey bee is the state insect followed closely by the black fly. You'll probably have to watch him carefully with the black flies, El. They're horrible for about six weeks.

Aren't the black flies the biting kind? I've been wondering how he'll react to those. He may not react at all. I'm allergic to fire ants, and both girls get decent sized rings with mosquitos AND fire ants. But Alexander only seems to be affected so badly by the mosquitos. Maybe they're the only ones he's allergic. Here's hoping!
