Jefferson, ME
What do you folks know about about Jefferson and Damariscotta Lake. We are looking for a place in a small town near a lake big enough to water ski on but within 30 minutes of the ocean. We really loved the mid-coast area and would like to move there this summer. We're coming back to look for homes and jobs in May and would like to narrow down our search. Any information you have about the area would be tremendously helpful. We have small children and need to know about schools and day cares in the area as well. Also, what is the community like. We were also thinking of Unity but after hearing about all the tree-huggers we've crossed that off of our list.

What do you do for a living? You said that you would be looking for jobs, and that will make a big difference in which area you will be able to live.

Jefferson is a very small, typical rural Maine town, less than 2000 people...only a couple businesses (small store, gas station, post office, etc, most people commute into Augusta or other larger towns for work and shopping....population triples in summer because of the very expensive, seasonal homes on the lake. Public boat access for the lake is only from one area, down on the west side, at the very southern end of the town - almost in Newcastle/Damariscotta.
Don't really know how the schools rate, I think slightly above average from what I recall...

My wife is a nurse so we're not worried about her finding work and I am a bodyman. I am hoping to start my own body shop soon after we move there but may get a job at a local shop to get a feel for the market and to find a good location. I also have my insurance adjuster's license and a business degree so I'm sure I'll find something. If anyone has any information on good and bad shops in the area I would greatly appreciate it. Also, does anyone know anything about the Togus VA center?

Bunker Hill Church in Jefferson, ME
Can someone from that area provide an address to the Bunker Hill Church in Jefferson, ME? I've tried doing online searches and have yet to find a street address to create direction.
Thank You.

If you're looking to get away from "treehuggers", Jefferson may not be the place for you. There are many, many acres of land placed under conservation easement in the area and people (in my opinion) are pretty conservation-minded.

With conservation easements comes intense scrutiny of what they call "fringe properties". If they can see or hear you they want to control everything you do. When they have driven you out they can often buy the property for pennies on the dollar. That's how they work.

Bunker Hill Baptist Church is directly on Bunker Hill Road which is also Route 213. I don't have a street number. Services are held in Summer only.

Jefferson is pretty cool - conservative -- some, but lots of creative people. We moved from the glitter of Hollywood and never regretted it. Have to contend with long, but usually beautiful, winter -- heating and plowing costs, four wheel drives, frequent storm blackouts, beautiful start of Spring, interrupted by invasion of blackflies, indoors everyone!
