Default Maine Deer hunting update

I thought I'd start a new thread to keep the deer hunting updates rolling.

I missed ANOTHER deer today! MAN this has NEVER happened to me before!
Sometimes I miss one but NEVER twice! I MUST BE GETTING OLD!
That's what happens when you turn 50 I guess!
It was a small deer at about 175 yards. Kind of a long shot, but still I should have hit it with that flat shooting .260 Remington!!!

I'm SOOOO mad at myself!

Oh well.... back at it tomorrow!!

Good luck Maineah! I just said something to Robin about hunting in the off topic thread... she said she might have to "hunt at Hannaford".... I gave her a pep talk, hope it works! I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

I'm glad you're continuing the hunting journal. I'm not happy that I've been wet, cold, and tired and still haven't seen anything!! There are several active deer in our area and they're obviously moving mostly at night. Some of their tracks on the dirt roads look like a chariot racetrack! The freakin' buck is chasing our does all over the place!
We track them all year, in real earnest during hunting season, and it's still the luck of the draw to be at the right place at the right time. I've got a doe permit and I'm determined. It's out again on the trail tomorrow. I still have the rest of Nov.

I'm beginning to wonder! I may have to sight in that rifle again! I put one in the bullseye and two within 3/4 of an inch of each other for a 1 1/2 inch group with that rifle at 100 yards a week before hunting season. It's a very acurate rifle! It's me! I either flinched or did not hold up enough for a 175 yard shot and shot under the deer.

Tomorrow's weather looks good here. It's pouring right now so it will be wet. The deer are moving in the dark here. We walk the road to go from the house to wherever we're hunting and step on the tracks. The next morning the road is loaded. There was a doe and her fawn here when we came home after dark yesterday. I did see a doe a mile up the road Sunday when we were out riding. We can't hunt them here. I refer to them as breeding stock. I'm not eating tenderloin for supper so I guess I'll have to go settle for pork ribs.

I think some of the deer are bold enough to move infrequently between the gravel holes here during the day. I wish I knew what they are feeding on. Hubby insists its acorns or something else on the oak knolls. They hang in the alder wetlands during most of the day, then move about at night.
