One side trip you may consider would be Fort Knox and/or the Penobscot Narrows Observation tower in Prospect, through Bucksport and down to Castine. Castine is a pretty village, and has a lighthouse (Dice Point). From Castine, drive down through Penobscot and then stop at my favorite Maine vista.. Caterpillar Hill in Sedgwick, which looks out over Walker Pond, with Penobscot Bay, islands, and the Camden Hills in the distance. (google images for Caterpillar Hill). Continue down to Deer Isle (stopping on Little Deer Isle to see Pumpkin Island Light) and to the fishing village of Stonington- there are 2 motels sitting right in the harbor village (Boyce's Motel and The Inn On The Harbor), as well as a great local diner (Harbor Cafe). The next day, head for Bar Harbor and Acadia via Blue Hill, Surry, and Ellsworth.
