Old Town Canoe workers info (YEARS ago)
My grandfather,George Kennedy, worked for Old Town Canoes many, many years ago. He has passed.
I am seeking any info from older workers from the company(or their family members) who might remember him. I contacted the company and they had no info.
Thank you!
Karen

There are a lot of Kennedys in the Old Town area. If you are related they may have old pics and stories for you.

Penobscot Times commonly shows a photo from decades ago.
Maybe they have an archive?

give these guys a shout
Lou Gilman and Scott Philips should be able to help.
As an aside, if you come across an old wood/ canvas OT canoe there are serial numbers stamped into the wooden stem and stern on the inside. If you give them to OT they will pull the boat's original build sheet with ink dates stamped for each process in the build and send you a copy. Includes the name of the person who ordered the boat. Will also send a copy of an ancient catalog page for that model boat.

What year did he stop working there? His name rings a bell. My uncle ran the place for several years and I worked there during summer in the late 80's early 90's. I have a cousin who still works there and has been there quite a while.

new Old Town
Lou has had health issues. Not sure when he retired or his current condition.
Try Bangor Parks and rec to get in touch with him if not directly.
I believe SC Johnson company now owns OT. Scott is/was a marketing/sales/goodwill guy. Confluence was buying up a lot of canoe companies. most companies have been consolidated.

I know you posted this a good while back, but if you're still checking:
My husband was a journalist in Maine in the late 70s and early 80s. He said he took photos of a few of the people who make the boats back around 1978, including photos of the men who made wood strip canoes and wood paddles. If you have a photo of your grandfather that could be emailed, my husband might be able to tell you something.
Best,
Allison
