I don't know where to find many of these "clannish" Mainers. I have been invited to join the Masons, people I hadn't met before have given/loaned me expensive electronic equipment, people have come to help me do things. Practically everyone I've met has been friendly and helpful and no one has asked where I lived before here.

I guess because I'm not a real Mainer I'm missing an inside joke.

I went to a bar in Greenville yesterday for a bite to eat and a beer along the water. I had the place to myself for about 15 minutes and then there were about 8 people around the bar area talking. They all seemed to know each other. From all walks of life. A clan of Greenvillians if you will. I was a fly on the wall for a while but after chiming into the conversations, I found they weren't any different than anywhere else. Seems that the weather, politics, the local economy and relationships are the subjects everywhere. I was part of their clan for a brief time. Clan friendly people they were. I seem to find that everywhere I wish to participate or engage myself. If I want to be to myself and not be bothered, I don't do that. I go to my clan of one and be.

El is a Mainer in my book. A Mainer at heart and mind.

I guess my upbringing had a lot to do with it, but I've never felt unwelcome wherever I've lived. Golden rule is pretty valid. That said, I remember discussing this same subject many years ago tied up to the dock with a few natives in the Casco Bay area. The consensus was that the farther east and more offshore you traveled, the more clannish people got.

I recall someone said if you land on Matinicus, the people are so clannish they not only won't talk to you, they won't even talk to each other! This was quite a while ago when there was very little contact with the outside world on those small islands.

When you have a people who are fighting for their very existence in some places, it makes perfect sense that they would be overly protective and tend to feel somewhat threatened by infiltrators. That has been evident throughout history.

What chaps my ass to no end is people who may have never even visited the great state of Maine or its people and think their opinion is even valid.

Too bad people are going to be people no-matter where you go!

I have to share this short story about a clannish Mainer I now call my dear friend!

I joined the forum in Sept 06. This very funny lady joined a few months after me, and she made a huge impression on everyone right off the bat. She was like the team mom! I always looked so forward to her posts. They were passionate, insightful, always funny and left many a lasting impression on me, even though we'd never communicated on a personal level.

At that time, I was in the beginning stages of planning our move and had so many stupid questions! One question that came up very early on was what we'd do with our dog, who is very much a part of our family. We just couldn't imagine leaving her behind if we ended up with a rental house where pets weren't allowed. One day, I got a DM from this stranger who'd never spoken directly to me before. She just wanted to let me know that I shouldn't worry. She lived within 2 hours of Belfast (where we thought we'd end up at first) and if we needed her to, she'd take in our Lady so we could keep her close, until we could find a home where we'd be allowed to have her. She even offered to have us up to visit anytime!

That was the first personal conversation I had with Mollysmiles - a clannish Mainer who grew up in the tiny community of Eastport, ME - and it was a simple gesture of kindness that I'll never forget!

I know this is a little off topic, but in the same vein people can be "insular". I do a lot of work in gated communities and I would never want to live in any of them. I don't mean to stereotype, however something about that separation gives the neighborhood a different feeling.

Income level is not necessarily an indicator of how you'll be treated, but as a contractor it is often one thing I take into the mix when bidding a job. Most of my customers are referrals and I've learned to steer clear of those who "send out the wrong vibes". In the last four years, two customers stiffed me for a sizable amount of money. Both lived in multi million dollar homes in gated communities. I was at each residence for 3 to 4 months so I get to know alot about them. Both had few friends alot of expensive " things" and both were hard to deal with especially when they refused to honor several thousand dollars of change orders at the completion of the jobs.

It was hard to get over both of these experiences. The best part was going on to jobs right after the bad ones where people treated you like family. One job they insisted that I not bring my lunch and made me hot meals every day. I got a bonus from them and another friendship for life.
