"Clannish" Mainers.........
My step-dad keeps using this term. He's been "talking to people"......not that I'll be deterred one little iota, but tell me about it. Personally, I don't get it. I've been there, interacted with the wonderfully helpful folks, and I've been friends with some of you on this forum for over two years now. So, why do Mainers get this rep all the way down here in Texas?

hey, I'm part of a clan.... let's see.... Lowe, McCannell (still MacCannell in Scotland and on PEI), then Muir, Davidson.... yup, that's my clan! Hey, there's even 4 coats of arms to go with them...
sorry.. couldn't resist. If protecting your neighbors, being watchful with some newcomers, and not making a pest of yourself when someone first arrives is clannish then ayuh, we're clannish.
oh, I forgot that infamous Beals Island Norton, and got a little Farris in there too from the Nanas

Like everything else, all topics refer to one's own experience. If someone comes along acting all high and mighty and declaring their way is the best way, then yeah, everyone that they offend will seem cold and all Mainers will seem clannish to such people. Mainers tend not to be hospitable to the rude and crude. And personally, I would just as soon those folks didn't move to Maine anyway. They would only spoil it.

I like to think that *I* have the ability to control my own experiences! We do tend to get exactly what we expect to get.

Well, because of their insistence on using terms like the Maple Curtain, the Volvo Line, Northern Mass, Real Mainers and any other terminology to further segregate themselves not only from the rest of the Northeast, but from the rest of Maine as well.

I agree. We can easily create the specific situation we're looking for.

There is a lot of truth to this. I have even been attacked for using the term, "the volvo line." It is seen as offensive to those who reside in the southern, coastal part of the state.

I haven't traveled as much as some others on this forum, but I have to believe that this is just human nature. I sure that most areas have this to some degree. We human beings like to separate ourselves. Here, to some people, NC is like two different states, East NC and West NC. I hear CA has the same thing. My friend in Germany makes fun of the Bavarians! NC and SC have the same thing, please don't call us Carolina.
I'm not sure that makes us clannish, we'd still be very friendly to anyone from SC. It's just a long running joke............
