I don't know personally but here is an interesting NPR broadcast about it.

With only one child still attending public school, I can not really say. This is our second year in Maine, and so far I have not heard anything about this program, except here on this forum.

It is not in our school district, it is not in our school. I have not read anything about it in our local newspaper. So I would guess that it is not a subject being discussed here in Maine, with the noted exception of here on this forum.

Default IMHO, just another waste of taxpayer dollars

Former Governor Angus King dreamed up the laptop program a few years back, To find money in the tight Maine budget for his pet project, he raised taxes and cut Medicaid payments to health care providers.

In general, laptop programs nationwide have been disappointing. A laptop is a tool, not a way of life, as Angus would have had everyone believe.

I stated this on another thread, but I'll just shorten it a bit....

the laptop program here in Calais is very successful. I have 4 children, three of them have been involved, and have learned techniques and skills I'm not sure they would have learned elsewhere. Their teacher is very well qualified, and has worked with them a great deal. He has an abundance of ideas and interests, and he keeps the kids working and learning at their own pace. I have a Mac---my kids help me learn what these programs can do (music, movies, art, word processing, drivers, external drives-they're learning it ALL!), and they enjoy the technology so much! In their lives, with technology becoming so advanced and changing so quickly, they NEED these skills and this knowledge. Check out the "did you know" video on YouTube.....pay attention to the section on technology....it's food for thought...

They start in 7th grade....the teacher assigns them a laptop for the school year. Here in Calais they don't necessarily get the same laptop for 8th grade, meaning it's not "saved" for them. It's the job of the individual school and/or teacher to decide if the laptop comes home. My kids have not brought theirs home, but we have a PC (theirs to share) and 2 Macs here, so unless they're in the middle of a project and have no time to complete it at school, they really wouldn't need to. And frankly, hubby could help them with a project like that, but not me!! lol...so it's good they do it all at school with their teacher!

According to my research, the program is still up and running statewide. Here is the official website: www.maine.gov/mlti/

I'm sure the truth is, sometimes they further the education mission and sometimes they don't, and success or failure is based on a myriad of environmental factors. Or is this program an act of desperation on Maine's part?
