Well, I for one was right here living in Mars Hill. There was no local vote on this subject. Our town council told us it was completely a private deal between the landowners who were leasing the land and UPC. We were told this after the plan was announced by our state Governor. Yes, I believe it's too late though.

Run your mouth some more and attack anyone who disagrees with you. We probably aren't smart enough to know what's bad! Are you from "away"...bet you are...therefore you're smarter!! As for land for sale...farm land in Aroostook County is going for about $500 per acre. The cheapest on Mars Hill Mountain I see is over $4000 per acre...and that's not tillable land...only good for windmills!!!!!!!

I live out here on the east side of the mountain and land around us is $1000/acre. I'm not from away exactly, I'm from the County anyway and my husband is from this town. We're not complaining loudly (mostly because we fear we'd get reactions like this) but we're not happy with the noise.
I will admit there are good days though. Some days when the wind is blowing FROM the east I can't hear a thing. Unfortunately for us, the wind doesn't mostly come from the east.

Don't worry qhmare, I for one am on your side, and will ALWAYS stand behind you on this detestable issue. I think GoldenCrow and Bovinehates are right next to me! You are not alone in this.
I think the real cause for the division is lack of education on the TRUE aspects of the turbines (NOT the propaganda puked out byt the wind companies), a lack of empathy in society in general, and an ever-increasing need to consume, consume, consume.
Here in NY, mnay many many folks like you and me have fought these things for more than 2 years now. We have turned over every stone-looking for the good and bad-there is not much good involved in these except to the leaseholders and the wind companies. So, me and Golden, and Bovine, and others in NY know A LOT about the turbines, the wind scammers, and the illegal methods that are used to get them put up. So, WE understand what you are going through, we have sympathy becuase we almost had to live under the 400 ft beast too. We feel for you because we UNDERSTAND that you and your neighbors are suffering greatly ONLY for the leaseholders, the wind companies. You are not suffereing for the greater good, your sacrifice WILL NOT lessen CO2 emissions, WILL NOT lessen dependancy on foriegn oil. The turbines are a "feel-good, I am doing something" scam. Reports are coming out of Europe now, that 10 years later there are a lot of regrets over putting the things up. No plants have been closed, the intermitant nature of wind has caused MORE porblems in the grid than solved, the residents are increasingly dismayed at all the broken promises and lies, etc.
I guarantee that 10 years from now, after 100s of 1000s of acres were destroyed and the coutry is blighted with these metal "white elephants," that there will be regret, propaganda justifing things that do not contribute anything meaningful, BILLIONS of OUR tax dollars went down the drain into Wind Companies' pockets all for nothing.
There are 2 sides qhmare-for and against. It is nearly impossible for one side to make the other side see the same thing. The againsts have read between the lines, have been to othere installations, have talked to people who live with them, have questioned their local government. The pro side reads the propaganda from the wind companies, yells "NIMBYs, selfish, we NEED MORE POWER, It is better than a coal or nuke plant, yada yada yada."
It will never end until it is proven that 410 ft turbines were a MISTAKE, they DID NOT reduce emissions nor dependency. That day will come. Sadly, you and your neighbors and thousands of others will have to live with the reminder of the biggest joke played on taxpayers.
Just remember, in spite of the negative words you read that go straight to your heart, you are NOT alone, your concerns and your rights are just as important as the person who lives in a 6,000 sq ft house, drives a Hummer, and lights up their property day and noght because they CAN. You count too, and you are not alone even though it may feel like you are!

Interesting Opinion piece that counter-balances a wind propaganda piece penned by a Mass. writer. A good example of the two sides counter-pointing each other.

qhmare, don't give up trying to educate people about the problems you and the rest of our neighbors back here have to deal with living near the windmills. I was pro for some time and did a report about the benefits of wind power several months ago, even liked the way they looked. However, people can and do see what has gone on if they have an open mind to really being educated and not just opinionated. I'm pretty stubborn but I really wanted to know the reality and not just what the wind companies and those with a financial interest will tell you (which is where most of the information for the report came from ). A lot of my education came from checking out the information posted here on this forum from those of you from NY who have been there done that. And you know, I look at the windmills through entirerly different eyes now.....they are pretty ugly in more ways than one!

Daizy, I am not only intrigued and inspired by this post, I am also most grateful that you took the time to share your personal experience and research for everyone to read. Perhaps your real-life "journey" with the Turbines could inspire others to dig deeper before forming an opnion and making comments that are deeply hurtfull to those that are the victims of this big-business boondoggle.

I'm not dissing the people who dislike the windmills...I for one have been looking for a piece of ground on the mountain for several years...and have not been turned off by the presence of the windmills. Point me in the direction of 5 to 10 acres for sale for $1000 an acre. The higher up the mountain the better...as long as I can get to it. I noticed some sound recording equipment set up on the 14th hole of the golf course the other day. I assume soon we will have some scientific data of the noise created. We stood beside the recording instrument and heard nothing. I don't know how far away the nearest windmill was, but it had to be less than 2000 ft. Last summer from the same location we could clearly hear the excavators and bull dozers as they worked away.
